Job Overview

Position Summary
Supports the Street Department in the implementation and maintenance of quality assurance systems, with specific responsibilities for the sign shop and the installation, repair, and replacement of street markers and traffic control devices. Operates necessary equipment and assists in the construction and upkeep of streets and drainage systems as required.

Compensation: Starting pay rate is $18.03 per hour. A CDL license is not mandatory for this role. However, candidates possessing a current Texas CDL license may qualify for a higher starting pay rate.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing and coordinating traffic control plans for special events and daily work zone safety for departmental tasks;
  • Conducting inspections of bridges and creek crossings within the city and completing necessary reporting, while recommending and scheduling repairs or modifications as needed;
  • Ensuring adherence to quality control measures on overlay projects and establishing required densities;
  • Managing the operations of the Sign Shop, including the installation, repair, and fabrication of street markers and traffic control devices in compliance with state laws and regulations;
  • Utilizing a computer-aided sign-making system for sign fabrication;
  • Clearing vegetation that obstructs traffic signals and signs;
  • Operating small equipment such as weed-eaters and crack sealers for the maintenance of streets, drainage facilities, and vegetation management;
  • Performing annual inspections of all traffic signals and signs, maintaining an up-to-date database;
  • Collecting and analyzing data related to the repair of deteriorating streets, curbs, and sidewalks;
  • Assisting with patching, tamping, packing, and leveling materials during road repairs as necessary;
  • Operating heavy machinery involved in the construction and maintenance of streets, including backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, mixers, and boom mowers;
  • Driving dump trucks to transport materials to and from work sites;
  • Collaborating with the Superintendent on various departmental projects;
  • Continuously enhancing knowledge of current and evolving sign laws and regulations.

Supervisory Role
This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications
To successfully perform this role, an individual must be capable of fulfilling each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary:

  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, with a preference for at least two years of experience in signs and markings maintenance, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience in handling, mixing, and applying herbicides is advantageous.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of sign and markings maintenance procedures and techniques, as well as safety protocols for job sites and equipment operation.
  • Skills and Abilities: Ability to operate equipment safely and effectively; read and comprehend manuals, letters, and memos; understand and follow labels and safety data sheets for chemicals; communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; and establish and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Certificates and Licenses: A valid Class B Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) is required. Employees without a Class B CDL must successfully complete the City of Brenham's CDL Training Program to obtain the required license within 180 days of hire.

Physical Requirements
The physical demands of this position require the employee to engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity, operate tools and equipment, drive vehicles, perform repetitive motions, and engage in various physical tasks. The employee must be capable of lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 100 pounds and must have the ability to see clearly, with or without correction.

Work Environment
The work environment necessitates that the employee exercise caution and adhere to safety standards to prevent personal injury. Exposure to outdoor elements, loud noises, vibrations, and respiratory hazards such as dust and chemicals is common. The employee may be required to work under time constraints, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and collaborate closely with others.
