Position Overview:
The Biomedical Equipment Specialist plays a crucial role within Intermountain Healthcare's Healthcare Technology Management division. This position is tasked with the upkeep of designated medical devices and systems, ensuring compliance with the Medical Equipment Management Plan. The specialist exhibits advanced skills in the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of sophisticated medical devices and systems. Additionally, this role involves educating clinical personnel on the technical aspects of device/system integration. The Biomedical Equipment Specialist may operate in various healthcare settings, including but not limited to: hospitals, outpatient clinics, surgical facilities, home health services, dialysis centers, central processing units, clinical laboratories, IT departments, or repair service centers.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of clinical equipment and systems, adhering to the Medical Equipment Management Plan.
  • Demonstrates expertise in the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of advanced medical devices.
  • Educates clinical staff on the technical integration of medical devices and systems.
  • Engages in diverse roles across various healthcare environments.
Technical Proficiency:
  • Possesses extensive experience in the relevant clinical environment.
  • Exhibits a comprehensive understanding of clinical equipment pertinent to the assigned role.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance (PM) in accordance with manufacturer specifications or established alternative maintenance (AEM) protocols.
  • May create AEM PM procedures.
  • Demonstrates subject-matter expertise in troubleshooting and repair techniques.
  • Acts as a mentor, sharing knowledge and techniques with the team.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of essential parts and supplies.
Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Leads projects as assigned.
  • May assume temporary leadership roles in the absence of departmental leadership.

To ensure the safety of patients and staff, Intermountain Healthcare prioritizes safe work environments. The Biomedical Equipment Specialist:
  • Understands and practices the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Utilizes tools safely and effectively.
  • Maintains a safe and organized work area.
  • Is familiar with Zero-Harm Error-Prevention techniques.
  • Ensures confidentiality of protected health information (PHI).
  • Addresses Risk Management and Quality Assurance issues proficiently.
Documentation Skills:
  • Documents services performed on medical equipment accurately and promptly using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Accesses and utilizes clinical equipment service history effectively.
  • References Intermountain Healthcare's clinical equipment manuals competently.
  • Mentors team members in the use of the CMMS.
Policy Knowledge:
  • Understands local and national public safety and regulatory standards.
  • Locates and references relevant policies and procedures effectively.
Communication and Engagement:
  • Ensures clear and effective communication at all organizational levels.
  • Reports issues and concerns to leadership.
  • Resolves customer service and regulatory issues efficiently.
  • Conducts regular rounds to foster a Clinical Engineering presence and identify service opportunities.
  • Provides ongoing education to clinical staff on the proper use of medical devices.
Professional Development:

Qualifications:
  • Experience in medical equipment maintenance and repair.

  • Familiarity with protocols and processes related to equipment maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET).
  • Relevant Associate or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Extensive experience in healthcare technology.
  • Certifications from medical device manufacturers.
  • Understanding of clinical networking and device connectivity.
