About the Department:

The Commonwealth of Virginia's Institute for a Sustainable Earth (ISE) actively engages in translating research and scholarship into actionable solutions for a more equitable and sustainable future. This department serves as a collaborative hub that connects diverse faculty, staff, and students across various academic disciplines with local, national, and global partners, fostering vibrant research communities and facilitating impactful transdisciplinary research. The ISE community comprises over 500 faculty and student researchers dedicated to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through research in natural sciences, social sciences, computational and data sciences, engineering, and humanities. ISE prioritizes partnerships that emphasize the practical impact of research. Our expanding network includes numerous community organizations, governmental bodies, professional associations, research collectives, and international environmental entities.

The Virginia Climate Center (VCC) offers essential resources and services to municipalities and businesses in Virginia, aiding in the adoption of strategies for climate risk prevention and sustainable resource management. Local decision-makers benefit from a comprehensive array of observational data, environmental models, and expertise in climate science and sustainability. VCC's data-driven support enhances fiscal responsibility and improves the quality of life for Virginians, particularly in vulnerable communities most affected by climate change. Initially focused on Northern Virginia, the VCC aims to extend its efforts statewide. This initiative was initially funded by a federal Community Project Initiative.

In collaboration with the Center for Climate Strategies and the University of Kentucky, the ISE and VCC have secured a substantial grant from the National Science Foundation's Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program. This funding will facilitate the development of university-wide initiatives designed to expedite the translation of scientific research into practical applications that local governments, community organizations, and businesses require to foster sustainable and climate-resilient communities. Inspired by the cooperative extension service model, this project aims to create a transformative framework for research translation that leverages higher education resources in partnership with community stakeholders.

The awarded grant will focus on three primary objectives: (1) accelerating the application of research to enhance climate resilience in communities across Virginia; (2) cultivating a culture of research translation through community engagement and collaborative product development; and (3) developing a skilled workforce of scholars and practitioners equipped to implement climate change research effectively. These initiatives will encompass three interconnected categories of activities: (a) organized outreach and engagement with municipal and community stakeholders; (b) community-oriented research translation supported by a modified lean launchpad approach for seed translational research projects; and (c) integrated training programs aimed at creating a climate-ready workforce.

About the Position:

The ART Project Coordinator will work closely with the ART Project Manager to collaboratively design, implement, and oversee a range of ART initiatives, including research translation and workforce development programs.

Responsibilities:

Organize and facilitate workshops, charrettes, and planning meetings with stakeholders to enhance program design and maximize impact; Compile information regarding existing academic and research translation initiatives, positioning ART programs within the broader ecosystem for optimal benefit; Manage academic approval processes for climate-related academic offerings; Develop strategic timelines and ensure the timely execution of program activities; Collaborate with community engagement specialists and project leadership to integrate external partners into ART initiatives; Work with project leadership and communications teams to devise recruitment strategies that ensure robust participation in ART programs; Establish program assessment metrics, gather data for evaluators, assess risks, and support continuous improvement efforts; Perform additional program-related tasks as required.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a relevant field; At least 2 years of experience in program development and/or management; Comprehensive understanding of climate and sustainability science and its implications for policy and practice; Strong project management skills with a proven ability to handle multiple concurrent projects; Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; Effective collaborator and team player.
