MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

This position is part of a specialized program aimed at enhancing employment opportunities within the state. For the duration of this program, candidates may be appointed without the need for a competitive examination, provided they meet the essential qualifications for the role.

It is anticipated that within a year of permanent appointment, individuals hired under this program will transition to a competitive status, allowing them to enjoy the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees.

While serving in this role, employees are encouraged to participate in any promotional examinations for which they qualify.

NON-COMPETITIVE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for appointment through this program, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position.

The qualifications are:
Electrical Engineering Assistant:
EITHER
  • Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND a qualifying bachelor's degree in a relevant field, OR
  • Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience in the relevant area.
Engineer Trainee (Electrical):
EITHER
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, OR
  • Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience.
COMPETITIVE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Reassignment:
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service as an Electrical Engineering Assistant or Engineer Trainee.
Eligible List Appointment:

Candidates who are reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for Electrical Engineering Assistant or Engineer Trainee may be considered for appointment.

Transfer to Engineer Trainee (Electrical):
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title deemed eligible for transfer under the Civil Service Law.

55b/c Appointment:

This position is eligible for 55b/c designation, and candidates with 55b/c eligibility are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must possess a current 55b/c eligibility letter and the following minimum qualifications:


Electrical Engineering Assistant:
EITHER
  • Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND a qualifying bachelor's degree, OR
  • Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience.
Engineer Trainee (Electrical):
EITHER
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, OR
  • Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience.

Qualifying degrees:
Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related fields.
Qualifying experience:
One year of full-time engineering experience in electrical systems.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Office of Facilities Planning is seeking candidates for the Electrical Engineering Assistant position. This office is primarily responsible for ensuring compliance with safety codes and regulations in public educational institutions.

Under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, the incumbent will be tasked with reviewing and approving engineering construction documents for projects undertaken by public school districts that require official approval.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the evaluation of construction documents (drawings, specifications, and supporting materials) to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations prior to the issuance of building permits.
  • Focus on smaller projects, which may include:
    • Fire alarm and suppression systems
    • Lighting and automated controls
    • Electrical service and distribution
    • Emergency communication systems
    • Solar energy systems
  • Provide technical support to school districts, architects, and engineers involved in public school projects.
  • Interpret codes, rules, and standards as necessary.
  • Respond to inquiries from various stakeholders, including school administrators and legislators.
  • Collaborate with other agencies on energy efficiency and climate change initiatives.
  • Assist in the implementation of innovative school programs related to energy systems and infrastructure.
  • Conduct special assignments as needed, including research and drafting regulations.
