Position Overview:

The Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) plays a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic, operational, and financial performance of Nursing Administration and patient care services. This includes management of various clinical departments such as Medical/Surgical, Emergency Services, Critical Care, Maternity, and more.

The CNE is tasked with fostering an integrated nursing practice that prioritizes clinical excellence, patient satisfaction, and safety. This involves planning, executing, and assessing services in alignment with established objectives and professional standards.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all facets of nursing operations within the healthcare facility.
  • Set and achieve departmental goals that align with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Identify and cultivate new business opportunities that enhance the hospital's mission and address competitive challenges.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with physician leaders and administrative teams.
  • Manage administrative personnel and ensure commitment to shared objectives among physician leadership.
  • Lead negotiations for healthcare delivery contracts relevant to nursing operations.
  • Assess operational and resource needs for new service offerings and evaluate their financial viability.
  • Analyze current service profitability to identify revenue enhancement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with management information systems to create tools for monitoring managed care performance.
  • Implement review processes to optimize revenue based on third-party requirements.
  • Develop and enforce compliance with operational standards and policies.
  • Establish staffing models that meet patient care demands and operational efficiency.
  • Supervise staff management in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Oversee recruitment, development, and performance management of nursing staff.
  • Prepare and present an annual budget for nursing operations in collaboration with department leaders.
  • Ensure departmental functions and patient care services are delivered within budgetary constraints.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and licensure standards.
  • Keep executive leadership informed about conditions affecting nursing operations.
  • Engage in strategic planning to support market growth, revenue improvement, cost management, and productivity maximization.
  • Interpret and implement administrative policies effectively.
  • Develop program objectives aimed at enhancing care processes and patient outcomes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Ability to navigate complex problems and address a variety of situations within established guidelines. Proficient in interpreting diverse instructions in various formats. Skilled in delegating tasks clearly and effectively.

Demonstrated capability to exercise sound judgment in interactions with patients, physicians, and other stakeholders.

Experience in budget management and decision-making frameworks for all functions. Ability to operate independently within the scope of hospital policies and regulatory standards. Establishes policies and procedures for areas of responsibility and contributes to the development of hospital-wide policies and strategic plans.

Directly supervises Associate Vice Presidents of Nursing and multiple Directors, managing staff across all areas of responsibility.


Education/Experience and License:
Education:

A Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is required. Equivalent experience may be considered. A Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Nursing or a related field, along with a minimum of five years in an executive nursing role.


Experience:

Significant experience in healthcare management (10+ years) with a comprehensive understanding of hospital operations from an administrative viewpoint. Proven communication and leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with physician leadership to achieve shared goals. Extensive knowledge of nursing practices, policies, and regulatory requirements in acute care settings.


Certification/Licensure:

Must hold a valid nursing license to practice in Massachusetts.
