Position Overview:

The Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) is accountable for the strategic, operational, and financial performance of Nursing Administration and patient care services. This role encompasses oversight of various clinical departments, including inpatient units, emergency services, critical care, maternity, and more. The CNE will spearhead the strategic advancement of an integrated nursing practice, ensuring exceptional clinical quality, patient satisfaction, and safety while aligning services with established objectives and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee all facets of nursing operations within the healthcare facility.
  2. Set and achieve departmental goals that align with the organization's mission and priorities.
  3. Identify and cultivate new business opportunities that support the healthcare mission and address competitive challenges.
  4. Foster productive relationships with physician leaders and administrative directors to meet organizational objectives.
  5. Manage administrative personnel and ensure physician leadership is committed to shared goals.
  6. Lead negotiations for healthcare delivery contracts relevant to nursing services.
  7. Assess operational and resource needs for new service offerings and evaluate financial viability.
  8. Analyze current profitability by service line to assist senior management in maximizing net revenue.
  9. Collaborate with information management systems to develop tools for monitoring performance.
  10. Implement review processes to optimize net revenue based on specific third-party requirements.
  11. Ensure compliance with relevant standards and policies governing operations and practice.
  12. Establish appropriate staffing patterns that meet patient care needs and operational efficiency.
  13. Manage staff in accordance with hospital policies and oversee the selection, development, and corrective actions of personnel.
  14. Prepare and present an annual operating and capital budget in collaboration with directors and physicians.
  15. Ensure departmental activities and patient care are delivered within the approved budget.
  16. Maintain compliance with regulatory and licensure standards.
  17. Keep the executive leadership informed about conditions within areas of responsibility.
  18. Engage in strategic planning that aligns with organizational goals for market growth, revenue enhancement, cost containment, and productivity maximization.
  19. Interpret and implement all administrative policies and procedures effectively.
  20. Develop program objectives and strategies aimed at improving care processes and enhancing patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  21. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to address practical challenges and navigate various variables within established policies.
  • Proficient in interpreting diverse instructions presented in various formats.
  • Capable of assigning and delegating tasks clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment in communication and actions with patients, physicians, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience in budget management and establishing decision-making frameworks for all functions.
  • Ability to operate independently within a broad scope of hospital policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Experience in developing hospital policies and strategic business plans.
  • Directly manage nursing leadership and various directors, taking on responsibilities as needed.

Education and Experience:

Education: A Master's Degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is required. Equivalent experience may be considered. A Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field, along with a minimum of five years in an executive nursing role.

Experience: Extensive experience in healthcare management (10+ years) with a comprehensive understanding of hospital operations from an administrative perspective. Proven communication and leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with physician leadership.

Certification: Must hold a valid nursing license in Massachusetts.
