Job Overview

Lead DevOps Engineer at SmartFinancial

As a Lead DevOps Engineer at SmartFinancial, you will be an essential member of our engineering leadership team. Your role will involve comprehensive management of critical infrastructure systems, shaping their strategy, architecture, design, and execution. You will work collaboratively with fellow leaders, business stakeholders, and engineers to establish roadmaps and achieve our strategic objectives. Your duties will encompass setting industry standards, refining the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), and enhancing our infrastructure, tools, and processes to uplift the overall engineering framework.

The ideal candidate is a proactive engineer with extensive experience in developing AWS environments tailored for development teams. You are adept at navigating organizational boundaries, mentoring engineers, and leading through example. Your capacity to enhance and optimize every area you engage with will be vital to your success.


Key Responsibilities:

Manage Cloud Environment

  • Oversee Cloud Operations: Supervise daily cloud administration, including proactive planning, issue resolution, and ensuring prompt incident management within the cloud environment.
  • Infrastructure Automation & Deployment: Guarantee the smooth automation and deployment of infrastructure to facilitate the delivery of SmartFinancial services.
  • AWS Environment Management: Assume responsibility for the overall functionality and performance of the AWS environment, ensuring its reliability and efficiency.
  • Optimize Cloud Performance & Costs: Continuously assess and enhance cloud health, automation processes, and cost management to drive operational excellence.
  • Maintenance & Diagnostics: Lead routine maintenance tasks and conduct diagnostic evaluations to ensure system integrity and performance.
  • Incident Management: Address ticket requests and manage escalated incidents swiftly, ensuring minimal disruption to services.
  • Documentation & Metrics: Document operational procedures and maintain detailed performance metrics to support ongoing optimization and transparency.

Design Cloud Architectures

  • Architect Cloud Solutions: Design and implement robust cloud infrastructures on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform, focusing on optimal database and system architecture.
  • Mentorship & Guidance: Provide mentorship and guidance on DevOps processes, methodologies, and best practices to foster the growth and development of the engineering team.
  • Compliance with Best Practices: Ensure adherence to industry best practices in cloud administration and cybersecurity to maintain secure and efficient operations.
  • Expert Contributions: Offer insights on information system options, assess risks, and evaluate operational impacts to facilitate informed decision-making within the organization.
  • On-Call Support: Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, responding to operational and security events to ensure continuous service availability.

Collaborative Efforts

  • Code and Script Maintenance: Maintain and enhance existing scripts (e.g., Perl, Python, Ruby) by updating code and resolving errors in the development environment.
  • Installation and Configuration Management: Oversee the installation and configuration of solutions to ensure the environment remains current and operational.
  • Collaboration with Technology & Security Teams: Work closely with technology and security counterparts to support and enhance infrastructure and security measures.
  • Process Optimization: Partner with cross-functional teams to optimize application, system, security, and database processes, ensuring efficient operations.
  • Automation of Manual Processes: Identify opportunities to automate manual processes, driving efficiency and reducing operational overhead.
  • GitHub Automation Development: Create and maintain GitHub automations to streamline and enhance CI/CD pipelines, improving the overall development process.

Qualifications:

  • AWS Certifications are advantageous.
  • 7+ years of experience in AWS Cloud and DevOps environments.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development.
  • 2+ years of experience with web applications.
  • 2+ years of experience with GitHub Automation and CI/CD integrations.
  • Experience with database migrations, maintenance, and upgrades.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers.
  • Proficiency in writing maintenance scripts for debugging and automation.
  • Expertise in monitoring systems using CloudWatch and custom alerts.
  • Strong documentation skills for processes and performance metrics.

Familiarity with:

  • Automation / DevOps tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, CloudFormation, CI/CD, GIT, Blue/Green Deployments, GitHub.
  • Security standards including OWASP, SSL, TLS, Encryption.
  • AWS services including EC2, IAM, RDS or Aurora, VPC, Route53, CloudWatch, S3, WAF, ECS, Fargate, Billing.
  • Programming languages and tools such as Bash, Shell, Ruby, Python, Linux (Amazon), Apache, Nginx.

Compensation and Benefits:

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package. The base salary range for this position is USD $130,000 - $180,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
