Position Summary:

In recent years, the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) has been advancing northward along Michigan's west coast.

This project is part of a collaborative effort involving federal, state, and local agencies to identify and manage HWA.

The Michigan Association of Conservation Districts collaborates with the North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (NCCISMA) to address invasive species challenges in western Michigan.

The selected candidates will have the chance to work on both private properties and public lands.

We are looking for self-motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic individuals who can effectively collaborate within a team environment.

Preferred candidates will possess strong communication skills, organizational abilities, and a background in natural resource management or a related discipline. Training for HWA identification and treatment will be provided, although prior experience with invasive species management is beneficial. Handling pesticides is a necessary aspect of this role.

Field Operations Specialists will encounter various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures, while performing physical tasks such as hiking on uneven terrain and carrying equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.

This may involve strenuous activities such as climbing dunes and navigating through dense vegetation, where encounters with stinging insects or toxic plants may occur.

Position Duties:
Conduct field surveys and mapping of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) during winter months.
Administer treatments for infested trees in summer using approved pesticides and specialized equipment.
Assist the Project Manager and Crew Lead in preparing communications for landowners and responding to inquiries via phone or email.
Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment as necessary.
Accurately enter survey and treatment data into digital platforms such as Survey123, Field Maps, or Google Sheets.
Support quality control and compilation of survey and treatment data for reporting purposes as directed.

Engage with the public to address inquiries related to control efforts and other conservation programs.

Serve as a rotating point of contact while working in pairs in the field.
Contribute to outreach events, newsletter articles, and social media content as needed.

Desired Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree (or progress towards such) in Biology, Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field OR one year of relevant field experience.

Ability to identify tree species and forest pests accurately.
Possession of a Michigan Pesticide Applicator License (or willingness to obtain) in Core, Forestry, Right-of-Way, and Ornamental categories.
Capacity to learn on the job and apply knowledge, including reading and adhering to pesticide labels.
Ability to communicate effectively with the public regarding forest pest issues and project details.
Familiarity with ESRI Survey123/Field Maps, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word), and Google Sheets.
Experience with data entry and management.
Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
Able to work collaboratively, follow instructions, and contribute positively as a team member.
Able to navigate various field conditions.
Competence in field navigation using both online and printed maps.
