San Francisco, California, United States Rainforest Action Network Full time
ABOUT RAN

For over three decades, the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) has been at the forefront of efforts to safeguard forests, combat climate change, and advocate for human rights by confronting corporate dominance and systemic inequities through research, education, alliances, non-violent direct action, grassroots mobilization, strategic initiatives, and communication. Our commitment extends to collaborating with Indigenous and frontline communities that are directly affected by profit-driven injustices. Together with global allies, RAN urges corporations to cease harmful practices, respect human rights, and implement comprehensive policies that mitigate their impact on climate change. RAN is dedicated to pursuing necessary actions, not merely those deemed politically viable.

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND EQUITY

RAN is devoted to embedding principles of equity and fairness into our operations, which includes a deliberate focus on racial justice and cultural equity within our programs and organizational framework. We aim to foster an internal environment rooted in mutual trust, collaboration, and respect, ensuring that all staff feel supported, valued, and heard.

We celebrate diversity across race, class, gender, culture, and religion, and implement internal programs to educate staff, board members, and activists on anti-oppression principles. For further insights into RAN's history, culture, and philosophy, please visit our website.

THE FOREST PROGRAM AND THE ROLE

RAN's Forest Program is dedicated to preserving tropical biodiversity from corporate encroachment and advocating for the rights of Indigenous and traditional peoples to govern and manage their lands. We are seeking a dedicated, passionate, and industrious Lead Specialist in Corporate Relations to spearhead engagement with corporations involved in our Keep Forests Standing initiative, collaborating closely with our global team. This role demands a high level of professionalism and adept negotiation skills to influence some of the largest agribusiness and forestry corporations globally, as well as their multinational clients. Whether engaging with a consumer goods manufacturing firm, representing RAN at industry panels, leading extensive negotiations on forest policies, or participating in team discussions, the ideal candidate will thrive in diverse interactions while remaining adaptable, proactive, resourceful, and efficient.

This position is highly collaborative, working alongside our corporate engagement and campaign teams across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, be exceptionally organized, and excel in written communication. This is a full-time, salaried position with comprehensive benefits, reporting directly to the Forest Campaign Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with the Forests Team to devise corporate campaign strategies that promote forest conservation and uphold the rights of forest communities.
  • Partner with the Forest Campaign Director and Forest Policy Director to lead negotiations regarding forest-risk commodity procurement and production policies.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with corporate stakeholders throughout forest-risk supply chains in tropical forest regions (e.g., Indonesia & Brazil).
  • Conduct policy analysis and engage with consumer goods manufacturing companies to inform our annual scorecard assessing corporate actions aimed at eliminating deforestation and human rights violations in forest-risk commodity supply chains.
  • Develop evidence-based materials for publications and briefing documents on forest policy and supply chain accountability issues.
  • Monitor global trends and analyze research to shape corporate engagement strategies.
  • Maintain expertise on tropical forests, agribusiness, forestry sectors, and forest-risk commodity supply chains, as well as related political and economic issues.
  • Serve as a public representative for RAN in media engagements and industry forums across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the global team and report to the Forest Campaign Director.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with key allies.
  • Support various aspects of RAN's initiatives (e.g., campaign, organizing, and fundraising activities).
  • Contribute to cultivating an inclusive and collaborative team culture alongside RAN staff in the U.S. and internationally.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in corporate, human rights, and/or environmental advocacy and conducting corporate negotiations, preferably within the context of corporate campaigning.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English, adaptable for presentations and correspondence with corporations, policy revisions, and publications.
  • Experience in public speaking, including media interactions.
  • In-depth knowledge of topics such as forest policies, human rights policies, forestry and agribusiness sectors, supply chain accountability systems (including supply chain mapping and engagement, traceability, human rights and environmental due diligence, monitoring, reporting and verification systems, grievance mechanisms), and land sector accounting.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management abilities.
  • A proven ability to work effectively within teams.
  • Commitment to uphold RAN's values in behavior and work towards racial justice and a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace that embraces and celebrates differences.
  • Commitment to nonviolent direct action principles.
  • Willingness to travel frequently, up to 40%, across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and to work flexible hours for meetings with corporations and our global team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience collaborating with Indigenous and frontline communities in tropical forest regions, particularly Indonesia and Brazil.
  • Language proficiency in regions where we operate is advantageous, including but not limited to Indonesian, Portuguese, and Japanese.
  • Previous experience working with cross-cultural teams across global time zones.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time role with a competitive starting salary range. RAN offers comprehensive benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, and a retirement plan with employer matching. After five years of service, staff members are eligible for a fully-paid sabbatical.

WORKPLACE STATUS

RAN is a union workplace, and our staff are represented by RAN Alliance for Workers' Rights (RAWR).

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

RAN is committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all individuals. We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and historically excluded identities to apply.
