Job Summary

The RN Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the operations and nursing personnel within the Behavioral Health department, including psychiatry and addiction medicine. This role provides clinical expertise and program management within the behavioral health service line, serving as a liaison and resource to staff members and providing direct patient care as needed.

The RN Supervisor supports the Patient Care Managers and Executive Director in administrative duties, providing leadership through collaboration with healthcare teams and maintaining standards of professional nursing practice within clinical settings. This position participates in organizational and department-based quality improvement activities, providing input on standards of care to maintain quality patient outcomes.

The RN Supervisor is responsible for ensuring staff members are adequately trained and competent to perform all required job tasks, resolving work-related issues, and conferring with managers to resolve complex situations. This role also coordinates quality outcome metrics and data to support quality activities, role-modeling through prioritization of activities and setting and attaining professional, personal, and professional goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate daily nursing and staffing activities of the department
  • Monitor and oversee daily nursing workflow, performing staff nurse duties as needed to ensure adequate staffing and delivery of safe patient care
  • Monitor quality initiatives and process improvement activities in the department
  • Develop and implement departmental and organizational policies/procedures and initiatives
  • Staff education, competencies, and orientation, and bi-yearly evaluations
  • Monitor and oversee ordering of department supplies, equipment, and medication
  • Participate in all nursing and organizational leadership programs, meetings, and initiatives
  • Ensure staff members are adequately trained and competent to perform all required job tasks
  • Responsible for various personnel actions, including hiring, performance appraisals, and promotions
  • Resolve work-related issues or assist employees in solving work-related issues, conferring with managers to resolve complex situations
  • Provide and facilitate competent healthcare of patients and families in the area of practice, ensuring adherence to established standards of care and scope of practice
  • Develop, implement, and participate in Quality Improvement initiatives and perform quality audits as directed/needed
  • Plan, administer, and evaluate patient care in practice
  • Coordinate quality outcome metrics and data to support quality activities
  • Role-model through prioritization of activities, setting and attaining professional, personal, and professional goals
  • Coordinate and attend organizational and departmental meetings where employment-related matters, policies, procedures, and programs are discussed
  • Maintain leadership role as appropriate within division meetings
  • Coordinate and deliver monthly team meetings
  • Participate in community outreach programs
  • Actively participate in professional committees, maintain membership in national and/or local professional organizations, promote team building, establish and achieve team's goals, facilitate team meetings, coordinate joint projects, operational coordination, maintain physician and staff schedules
  • Involvement in Psychiatry Residency program development with input and oversight of nursing staff involved
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary patient care conferences to discuss current and upcoming high-risk patients with physicians
  • Support the Director & Manager in collecting information for accreditation surveys and departmental audits, actively assist the Director with implementation of recommended changes
  • Serve as educational liaison and resource to nursing throughout the health system on behavioral health patient care and needs
