Operations Support Supervisor

At American Water, we are seeking an experienced Operations Support Supervisor to join our team in Urbana, IL. This role will be responsible for providing oversight of contractors and vendors, managing inventory, ordering parts and materials, and monitoring job site conditions.

The ideal candidate will have a mechanical aptitude and strong communication and customer service skills. They will be responsible for developing, modifying, and implementing effective and efficient processes, programs, and controls, championing innovation and best practices.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Encouraging best practices and innovation throughout operational areas and working collaboratively to mitigate business risks.
  • Defining and documenting processes and managing execution to ensure compliance.
  • Making recommendations to improve performance within operations.
  • Managing property maintenance and repair activities, including capital replacements, at property sites and structures across all service areas.
  • Managing the operations center infrastructure, including routine maintenance and capital activities.
  • Managing landscaping activities for various properties.
  • Managing monthly production operating and capital budget review and analysis.
  • Supporting and participating in safety and security assessments and other related activities for properties in the service district.
  • Managing various aspects of the capital budget and capital budget process, including Power Plan work orders applicable to the production group.
  • Completing month-end reporting processing, including accruals, required accounting submissions, and billing.
  • Supporting Tool and Equipment Management within the Production Department.
  • Supervising an operations support employee in the production group and serving as a backup for critical activities of that role.
  • Collaborating with contractors and vendors on projects.
  • Leading and collaborating with AW employees and contractors on project design and implementation.
  • Providing analytical, process, and administrative support for Operations' regulatory compliance programs.

Requirements include:

  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to utilize multiple methods of analysis.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to build productive working relationships with other functions, lead cross-functional teams, and motivate and develop staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Strong focus on quality and customer service.
  • Ability to effectively train others in systems and processes.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Access).
  • Understanding of financial reporting requirements, methods of process development and analysis, and use of analytical tools.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, management, or related field.
  • Equivalent experience in the water or wastewater industry may be substituted for education.
  • Experience using analytical tools and defining and documenting processes.
  • Experience communicating directly with external customers.
  • Experience in training others in systems and processes.
  • Experience supervising preferred but not required.
