Job Summary:

The Financial Reporting Specialist position is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, including GAAP and statutory reporting. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of financial reporting principles and be able to independently respond to questions and inquiries, investigate and resolve reporting issues, and provide support to other finance professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Financial Statement Preparation: Prepare all financial statements, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, for Canal Insurance Company.
  • Statutory Reporting: Prepare annual and quarterly statutory statement filings, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • General Ledger Management: Responsible for monthly general ledger journal entries, reconciliation of accounts, and other accounting operational and reporting activities.
  • Tax Accounting: Manage federal and state tax accounting, including monthly and quarterly tax provision preparation, and coordination with external tax resources.
  • Financial Reporting Templates: Manage financial reporting templates and update or redesign as business needs grow or change.
  • Internal Controls: Support the development and execution of financial internal controls, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of financial reporting.
  • Audit Support: Assist in the completion of audit items for the external audit and state examinations, including organization of and communication between the Company and the auditor, tracking of deliverable items, and handling follow-up questions and responses.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Identify and report changes related to regulatory reporting, statutory, and GAAP accounting standards and their impact on the Company.
  • Investment and Expense Accounting: Support the investment and expense accounting functions.
Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Experience: Minimum two years of financial statement, accounting, or financial information experience required. Prior insurance company experience preferred. Tax accounting experience preferred.
  • Skills: Advanced computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Internet, e-mail) required.
