Job Overview

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is seeking a dedicated Electronics Engineer to contribute to various innovative projects. This role involves providing essential engineering support for advanced instrumentation, focusing on high-frequency analog and high-speed digital signal processing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a mid-level FPGA firmware engineer, responsible for implementing firmware solutions, including testing and debugging both new and existing firmware.
  • Conduct preliminary checks on electrical circuits and system designs, assisting in the setup of lab bench tests for evaluating both commercially purchased and in-house developed instrument components.
  • Create formal schematics, parts lists, and assembly drawings from initial sketches or verbal instructions, translating electrical designs into PCB layouts while managing fabrication orders and inventory.
  • Provide technical guidance and review the work of printed circuit layout vendors.
  • Develop 3D models of assemblies for electrical hardware, performing thermal analysis to meet stringent operational requirements.
  • Design embedded software for the control and monitoring of instrumentation.
  • Support engineering design reviews and participate in technical meetings.
  • Collaborate with scientists and multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful system development.
  • Engage in regular planning and status reporting activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • A degree in professional engineering from an accredited institution, including coursework in essential engineering sciences.
  • Alternatively, a combination of education and experience that provides a thorough understanding of engineering principles.

Additional Requirements: Candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience in a similar role, demonstrating the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job effectively.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of engineering theories and principles, enabling the execution of complex assignments related to scientific instrument development.
  • Expertise in FPGA firmware development, with the ability to evaluate, debug, and deploy on hardware.
  • Proficiency in PCB layout software and a foundational understanding of high-speed design principles.
  • Experience with Solidworks or similar software, along with skills in writing embedded software for real-time operating systems.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an engineering design team.
