Job Overview

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is seeking a skilled Electronics Engineer to provide vital support in various projects. This role focuses on cutting-edge instrumentation that presents unique challenges in high-frequency analog and high-speed digital signal processing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a mid-level FPGA firmware engineer, developing and debugging firmware solutions for both new and existing systems.
  • Conduct preliminary checks on electrical circuits and system designs, assisting in the creation of lab test setups for evaluating instrument components.
  • Prepare detailed schematics, parts lists, and assembly drawings from initial concepts, translating electrical designs into PCB layouts.
  • Provide technical guidance and review the work of printed circuit layout vendors.
  • Create 3D models of assemblies for electrical hardware, performing thermal analysis to meet stringent operational requirements.
  • Develop embedded software for instrumentation control and monitoring.
  • Support engineering design reviews and participate in technical meetings.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers across disciplines to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Engage in regular planning and status reporting activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • A degree in professional engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Alternatively, a combination of education and experience that provides a thorough understanding of engineering principles.

Additional Requirements: Candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience at or above the grade 9 level in similar roles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering theories and methodologies related to electrical engineering.
  • Expertise in FPGA firmware development, including debugging and deployment.
  • Proficiency in PCB layout software and principles of high-speed design.
  • Experience with Solidworks or similar software and embedded software for real-time operating systems.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
