Position Overview:

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a renowned research institution dedicated to the exploration of the cosmos. As a pivotal entity in astronomical research, NRAO provides a stimulating environment for scientists, students, and enthusiasts alike, fostering opportunities for discovery and innovation.

We are currently in search of an Electronics Engineer or Computer Scientist to contribute to the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) initiative. This groundbreaking project involves the development of a sophisticated radio telescope array, featuring over 200 antennas distributed across North America. The ngVLA project has received significant recognition from the National Academy of Sciences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with the ngVLA Digital Back End design team to create HDL-based FPGA firmware.
  • Design hierarchical System-on-Chip architectures tailored to complex system specifications.
  • Oversee prototype testing in laboratory settings and at ngVLA antenna locations, while supporting the implementation team during system production and deployment.

Work Environment:

The work culture is mission-driven and collaborative, typically conducted in an office environment within a research or development context.

Candidate Profile:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Have three to five years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of FPGA Design Flow.
  • Exhibit knowledge of FPGA Block-Level and Full-Chip Design.
  • Preferred qualifications include:
  • Five or more years of experience in VHDL or Verilog for large-scale Xilinx and/or Intel FPGAs.
  • Experience in embedded Linux software design using C/C++/Python.

Competency Requirements:

  • High proficiency in VHDL or Verilog based FPGA firmware development.
  • Experience in implementing real-time digital signal processing for scientific data streams.
  • Familiarity with block-level and full-chip architecture is advantageous.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are essential.
  • Excellent communication abilities are required.
