National Radio Astronomy Observatory

Position Overview:

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a distinguished research institution that significantly contributes to our understanding of the cosmos. NRAO is an innovative organization dedicated to advancing our knowledge of the universe through the development and management of some of the most advanced telescopes globally. We provide numerous opportunities for learning, exploration, and discovery.

We are in search of a skilled electrical engineer with expertise in radar systems for a two-year engagement to oversee the technical components of a groundbreaking radar initiative. This project aims to establish a high-power, high-frequency radar system utilizing the Green Bank Telescope, with signals being received by NRAO's Very Long Baseline Array. You will leverage your engineering skills in analysis, system architecture, hardware creation, and technical decision-making to ensure the project's success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the engineering analysis, design, testing, and implementation of radar systems across NRAO facilities.
  • Make conclusive technical decisions and recommendations in collaboration with the project team during the design, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, and testing phases.
  • Engage regularly with astronomers and scientists to align system performance with scientific and mission requirements.
  • Guide engineering and technical teams in the production and testing of equipment, establishing methods, procedures, and conditions for testing. Ensure that manufacturing, assembly, installation, and operational testing meet functional specifications and standards.
  • Utilize industry-standard engineering and design software to create and implement data controls for electronic equipment, components, systems, or structures related to radar transmitters and radio telescopes.
  • Collaborate with software developers, scientists, and contractors to identify and resolve issues.
  • Prepare technical documentation that details the radar system.
  • Develop programmatic documentation and lead projects from conception to operational status.
  • Effectively communicate and present project progress to both internal and external stakeholders.

Work Environment:

Work is generally conducted in a research or development setting, though employees may occasionally need to work outdoors. Physical activities include standing, sitting, and performing fine motor tasks. Proficiency in personal computer usage is required. Employees must work near moving mechanical parts and/or electrical equipment and must possess effective verbal and written communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years of experience as an engineer specializing in radar systems.
  • A bachelor's degree in a physical science, electrical engineering, systems engineering, computer science, or software engineering.
  • In addition to radar engineering experience, knowledge and expertise in two or more of the following areas: radio frequency, microwave, or millimeter wave receivers, transmitters, and related systems, radio telescopes, satellite earth stations, interferometry or beam synthesis, high-voltage DC power supplies, and high-speed digital electronics.
  • Experience with radio frequency and electromagnetic modeling and simulation software; familiarity with CST, HFSS, and similar tools is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills related to testing or analyzing data from advanced radar systems. Familiarity with algorithm/mode techniques on radars is advantageous.
  • Engineering management experience is highly desirable.

Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
  • Effective verbal communication skills and proficiency in technical document creation.
  • Problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience working with geographically dispersed teams.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Proactive work ethic with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Ability to take initiative and make informed technical project decisions.

Compensation and Benefits:

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory offers a comprehensive total rewards package for this position, subject to eligibility requirements. We are committed to supporting our employees and their families with a competitive compensation and benefits package that promotes overall well-being and career advancement.

Application Process:
