Job Overview:

The Patient Meal Service Specialist is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care through efficient and professional meal service. This role involves serving meals to patients, explaining the room service meal ordering process, and ensuring that patients receive the correct meals based on their dietary needs. Additionally, the Patient Meal Service Specialist will assist patients with meal ordering, check that all patients have ordered and received meals, and communicate with patients who are refusing meals. The role also involves picking up trays after meals and bringing them back to the kitchen.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collects the final tray list for assigned patient units from the Communication center clerk for each meal
  • Checks meal delivery trucks for supplies and condiments
  • Serves meals to patients in a professional and efficient manner and checks patient wristbands for identification
  • Visits new admissions or changed diets to explain the room service meal process and provide menus that match the diet order
  • Assesses patient ability to utilize the room service system and follows up with the nurse or dietitian if necessary
  • Assists patients with ordering meals when requested and offers pre-select meal sheets to patients and families
  • Collects dirty trays from patient rooms and brings them to the dish room after each meal time
  • Processes diet requisitions retrieved from nursing stations
  • Delivers between-meal nourishments to patients
  • Mediates patient concerns regarding meal service
  • Acts as a liaison between the food and nutrition department, patients, and nursing staff
  • Takes ownership of problems and ensures a positive outcome
  • Assists the supervisor in portioning food, coffee, or silverware
  • Serves as a quality assurance control point for every aspect of the room service program
  • Checks off patient names on the tray list upon tray delivery and records the time of delivery

Requirements:

  • Fluent in English speaking, reading, and writing
  • Good communication skills and people-friendly
  • Must be detail-oriented, open, and willing to learn
  • Flexible hours, available holidays, and weekends
  • Able to move small and large food service trucks around

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or two-year associate degree preferred

Work Environment:

This role is based in a hospital setting and requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high level of attention to detail. The Patient Meal Service Specialist will work closely with the food and nutrition department, nursing staff, and patients to ensure that meal service is delivered efficiently and effectively.
