About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced PhD-level innovator to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a member of our Asymmetric Operations Sector, you will play a key role in advancing the field of cybersecurity and developing novel methods for software, hardware, and firmware reverse engineering.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reverse Engineering and Analysis: Join forces with our team to analyze and reverse engineer systems to identify and understand security vulnerabilities.
  • Research and Development: Use internal funding opportunities to shape the direction of future research and develop groundbreaking technologies to defeat advanced security techniques.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Circulate knowledge by articulating ideas clearly through papers and presentations to technical staff, management, and government decision makers.
  • Solution Development: Build forward-thinking solutions for prototype and operational systems.
Qualifications
  • Education: Possess a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical degree.
  • Experience: Have experience in embedded development, reverse engineering, or hardware hacking.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Communication Skills: Are an outstanding communicator in both written and verbal forms.
  • Security Clearance: Can achieve (or currently hold) an active Secret security clearance by the first day of employment. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Additional Requirements: Are able to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical Leadership: Have held dynamic technical leadership roles for 5+ years.
  • Operating System Expertise: Understand the internals of major operating systems, exploitation techniques, and mitigations.
  • Assembly Language Skills: Have experience reading or writing assembly (x86/x64, Arm, PowerPC, MIPS, or others).
  • Department of Defense Experience: Have had prior interactions with the Department of Defense and/or Intelligence Community.
  • TS/SCI Clearance: Hold an active TS/SCI Clearance.
