Maryland City, Maryland, United States The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Full time

Join a dynamic and innovative Cybersecurity Research & Hunt Team

Are you a detail-oriented and analytical professional with extensive expertise in Cybersecurity?

If this resonates with you, we invite you to consider a position with us at APL.

Recognized as a premier workplace in IT, we are on the lookout for a Cybersecurity Threat Specialist to assist in monitoring advanced cyber threats, adapting to a constantly changing threat environment, and analyzing data to detect harmful activities. Your role will involve real-time incident management, developing and executing procedures to investigate and mitigate malicious actions. You will gather evidence, including digital media, logs, and malware, to conduct thorough analyses related to cyber intrusions. Staying informed about attack strategies is crucial, as is operationalizing this knowledge to enhance our security posture. You will also be tasked with providing recommendations and refining processes based on insights into advanced threat behaviors. Your responsibilities will include identifying and evaluating threats through OSINT, Threat Intelligence, research, and leveraging enrichment resources.

As a Cybersecurity Threat Specialist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Proactively hunting for advanced cyber threats by scrutinizing data to uncover malicious behaviors. You will manage real-time incidents, independently following and crafting procedures to analyze and mitigate harmful activities. Collaborating with colleagues will be essential to build a cohesive response to cyber incidents. Evidence collection across various platforms, along with malware analysis, will be a critical part of your role. Staying current with threat intelligence and adversarial tactics will be necessary for operational effectiveness.
  • Enhancing and developing methodologies for threat hunting, monitoring, and incident response across diverse platforms (on-premises, SaaS, IaaS, IAM). You will refine processes, workflows, and documentation while identifying high-fidelity behavioral patterns and creating content for multiple tools.
  • Engaging in projects and cross-functional security teams that require collaboration with system administrators, cloud engineers, IAM administrators, networking personnel, application developers, IT operations staff, and cyber research and development teams to implement information assurance controls and risk mitigation strategies. Regular reporting on objectives and achievements to management will also be part of your duties.
Qualifications

You will meet our minimum qualifications if you possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Information Security, a related field, or equivalent experience that equips you with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for success.
  • At least 7 years of experience in complex multi-platform network environments.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in an operational multi-platform cybersecurity setting.
  • Proficiency in data extraction and manipulation using scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, SPL, or others.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based threats, IAM exploits, and lateral movement within cloud environments.
  • A strong understanding of IAM authentication anomalies and the tactics adversaries use to bypass multi-factor authentication.
  • Familiarity with normal operating system activities, OS internals, MITRE ATT&CK, and the ability to identify anomalous behaviors.
  • Experience with Assume Breach methodologies and a solid understanding of attack strategies employed by Nation State adversaries, including living off the land and TTPs outlined in the MITRE ATT&CK framework.
  • Experience analyzing data with tools such as Splunk, ELK, Hadoop, Python, or SQL.
  • Technical expertise in areas such as Azure, AWS, SaaS, CAASM, SASE, SSE, IAM, EDR, Suricata, Zeek, Full Packet Capture technologies, Firewall, Proxy, and Sandbox technologies.
  • Experience with memory analysis, host-based anomaly detection, and network anomaly detection.
  • Understanding of Red Team and Threat Emulation exercises.
  • The ability to obtain a Secret security clearance, subject to a government security clearance investigation and eligibility requirements, including U.S. citizenship.

You will exceed our minimum requirements if you have:

  • A Master's Degree in Cybersecurity or a related field.
