Job Summary

Covenant Health (Tennessee) is seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist to join our team in a busy outpatient laboratory setting. As a Medical Technologist, you will play a critical role in performing high to moderate complexity clinical lab tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform high to moderate complexity tests as appropriate for each testing department.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when the test process deviates from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Perform proficiency testing samples and distribute among all testing personnel while maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adhere to laboratory quality control policies; document all control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; either correct the problem or notify the Technical Consultant or Laboratory Director if the problem cannot be resolved.
  • Responsible for orientation, instruction, and evaluation of students and new employees to the department.
  • Prepare various reagents and supplies according to precise formulas as needed.
  • Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in patient accessioning and resulting; monitor incomplete and collection lists.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments, as specified.
  • Check communication boards at least weekly.
  • Plan work to ensure maximum productivity with minimum amount of carryover work, while keeping overtime to a minimum.
  • Responsible for communicating with providers and other appropriate staff needed information about patient samples or instrument performance.
  • Act as a resource person for phlebotomy, if trained appropriately, including outpatients.
  • Review abnormal patient reports, LIS/EMR tracers, Levey-Jennings/QC reports, environmental documentation, and maintenance logs monthly at a minimum.
  • Maintain and disinfect work area.
  • Assist with coverage of processing and distributing specimens.
  • Participate in inservices.
  • Handle biohazard wastes according to policy.
  • Responsible for evaluation and validation of testing systems.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient, co-worker, and business information at all times.
  • Use proper judgment in releasing information; analyzer situations and take appropriate actions.
  • Perform any job-related duties assigned by competent authority. Help other departments as qualifications and needs permit.
  • Adhere to Covenant Health policies on Integrity and Compliance issues.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or in one of the biological, chemical, or physical sciences and with completion of a MT training program.
  • Baccalaureate degree, MLT/CLT certification, three (3) years of full-time clinical laboratory work experience, and completion of science coursework equivalent to that required in a laboratory science education program.
  • Baccalaureate degree, five (5) years of full-time clinical laboratory work experience, and completion of science coursework equivalent to that required in a laboratory science education program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Tennessee State License as a Medical Technologist.
  • Certification by ASCP or NCA is preferred.
