Job Summary

Covenant Health (Tennessee) is seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist to join our team in a busy outpatient laboratory setting. As a Medical Technologist, you will play a critical role in performing high to moderate complexity clinical lab tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform high to moderate complexity tests as appropriate for each testing department, adhering to laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when the test process deviates from the laboratory's established performance specifications, ensuring that patient results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and the test is performing as expected.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, distributing samples among testing personnel and maintaining records that demonstrate proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adhere to laboratory quality control policies, documenting all control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed, and notifying the Technical Consultant or Lab Director of out-of-control situations if problems cannot be resolved.
  • Identify and address problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, either correcting the issue or notifying the Technical Consultant or Laboratory Director if the problem cannot be resolved.
  • Provide orientation, instruction, and evaluation of students and new employees to the department, ensuring a smooth transition and effective onboarding process.
  • Prepare various reagents and supplies according to precise formulas as needed, utilizing the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for patient accessioning and resulting, and monitoring incomplete and collection lists.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments, as specified, and check communication boards at least weekly to ensure effective communication and minimize downtime.
  • Plan work to ensure maximum productivity with minimum carryover work, while keeping overtime to a minimum, and communicate with providers and other staff as needed to ensure timely and accurate patient sample processing and instrument performance.
  • Act as a resource person for phlebotomy, if trained appropriately, including outpatients, and review abnormal patient reports, LIS/EMR tracers, Levey-Jennings/QC reports, environmental documentation, and maintenance logs monthly at a minimum.
  • Maintain and disinfect work areas, assist with coverage of processing and distributing specimens, participate in inservices, and handle biohazard wastes according to policy.
  • Responsible for evaluation and validation of testing systems, maintaining strict confidentiality of all patient, co-worker, and business information at all times, and using proper judgment in releasing information, analyzer situations, and taking appropriate actions.
  • Perform any job-related duties assigned by competent authority and help other departments as qualifications and needs permit, adhering to Covenant Health policies on Integrity and Compliance issues.
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or in one of the biological, chemical, or physical sciences, with completion of a medical technology training program.
  • Baccalaureate degree, MLT/CLT certification, three (3) years of full-time clinical laboratory work experience, and completion of science coursework equivalent to that required in a laboratory science education program.
  • Baccalaureate degree, five (5) years of full-time clinical laboratory work experience, and completion of science coursework equivalent to that required in a laboratory science education program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Tennessee State License as a Medical Technologist.
  • Certification by ASCP or NCA is preferred.
