At The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), we are looking for a motivated and skilled Autonomous Systems Test Engineer to become part of our diverse team, focused on pioneering applications of AI and autonomy to enhance future combat capabilities.

Your Role:

  • Conduct research and develop innovative methodologies for the testing and evaluation of AI and autonomous systems, focusing on performance assessment, trust, and certification.
  • Explore areas such as live-virtual-constructive environments, runtime assurance, performance metrics, real-time analysis, and complex systems analysis.
  • Design and implement test requirements, safety plans, processes, methodologies, and execution strategies for intelligent combat systems.
  • Participate in the testing of software and hardware, supporting ground and flight evaluations of AI and autonomous systems, including operations at remote sites.
  • Provide expert guidance to clients regarding testing strategies, plans, schedules, and capabilities to ensure successful program outcomes.

Qualifications:

You will be a strong candidate if you possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in test engineering.
  • Experience in developing test plans and reports, as well as supporting live test events.
  • Proficiency in creating analysis tools and techniques using programming languages such as Python or MATLAB.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • The ability to travel as required for testing at various locations.
  • Eligibility to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

It would be advantageous if you have:

  • A Master's degree or higher in a relevant engineering field.
  • Experience with unmanned aircraft testing and evaluation.
  • Familiarity with testing and evaluation related to autonomy, AI, or machine learning.
  • An active Top Secret clearance.
