Position Overview

SUMMARY:

The Educator, under the guidance and mentorship of the Center Director, will oversee a designated group of children. This role encompasses the planning and execution of educational programs, ensuring the well-being and safety of the children, maintaining communication with families, and supervising support personnel. The educator will embody the principles of the YMCA mission, adhere to accreditation standards, and promote the four core values of character development: honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility, to create a high-quality program that enables every child to thrive.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Collaborate closely with the Director to ensure all educational plans are reviewed and sanctioned according to the Director's timeline.
  2. Implement curriculum plans and daily activities tailored for children.
  3. Model and enforce all health and safety protocols for staff and participants.
  4. Supervise and mentor teaching assistants.
  5. Develop age-appropriate educational materials that align with New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.
  6. Complete a minimum of 12 hours of professional development training annually as mandated by relevant governing bodies.
  7. Recognize signs of child abuse and understand the reporting obligations.
  8. Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of child development when engaging with children, documenting activities, and communicating with parents.
  9. Demonstrate effective teaching practices through both verbal communication and practical modeling.
  10. Assist swim instructors in maintaining appropriate staff-to-child ratios during aquatic activities.
  11. Guide and mentor teaching assistants to align with the YMCA mission and core values.
  12. Prepare suitable educational materials for daily activities.
  13. Support the Y's HEPA standards by participating in activities and meals, avoiding consumption of non-compliant foods during program hours.
  14. Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment conducive to children's growth and development.
  15. Observe, document, and assess significant behaviors of children.
  16. Supervise indoor and outdoor activities, including nap times.
  17. Participate in staff and parent meetings, contributing meaningfully to discussions.
  18. Conduct individual meetings with parents at least twice a year to discuss their child's progress and address any concerns.
  19. Monitor supplies and equipment, requesting necessary items from the Director.
  20. Administer first aid as required and oversee children's personal hygiene practices.
  21. Manage the administration of medication with written parental consent.
  22. Complete all necessary paperwork to comply with state regulations.
  23. Oversee bathroom procedures, including diapering and handwashing.
  24. Facilitate classroom staff meetings to ensure compliance with state regulations.
  25. Exhibit a professional enthusiasm for teaching.
  26. Maintain current CPR and First Aid certifications.
  27. Attend mandated workshops during designated periods and additional professional development days as required by the Director.
  28. Fulfill any other responsibilities as assigned by the Director.
  29. Accurately log hours worked using the designated time management system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent group teaching certification recognized by relevant authorities.
  • Minimum of one year of teaching experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires regular walking, standing, sitting, running, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, speaking, reading, and writing. The individual must be able to hear, see, and respond promptly to children's needs.
