About the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Motor Vehicle Operator to join our team at the Veterans Health Administration. As a Motor Vehicle Operator, you will be responsible for safely transporting patients to and from medical facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receiving work assignments and direction regarding work methods, procedures, and schedules from the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Mobility Manager.
  • Operating one or more types of patient transport vans/buses and other types of transport vehicles.
  • Carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas.
  • Driving predetermined and/or scheduled routes or runs.
  • Arriving and departing from pick-up and discharge points at scheduled times.
  • Enforcing passenger safety and seatbelt use.
  • Safely transporting patients in a manner that minimizes disruption to personnel and ensures maximum comfort during travel.
  • Abiding by rules, laws, and traffic regulations pertaining to state laws.
  • Loading and unloading patients safely.
  • Using multiple variations of Mobile Data Computer (MDC) in and out of the vehicles for assigned trips and duties daily.
  • Interacting with patients, families of patients, charge nurses, doctors, and other medical staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Maintaining records and documenting actions, such as operator inspection checklist/forms and accident/incident reports.
  • Participating in Service Safety activities and attending scheduled safety training as directed by supervisor.
  • Reading installation maps and judging road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route.
  • Performing operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles.
  • Performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to pass a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Must be able to serve a probationary period.
  • Must be able to pass a background/security investigation.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
  • Must be able to participate in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program.

Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle.
