Knoxville, Tennessee, United States Emerald Youth Foundation Full time
Position Overview

Compensation: $17.00 per hour

We appreciate your interest in the role of a Tutor with Emerald Youth Foundation.

Since its inception in 1991, Emerald Youth Foundation has dedicated itself to uplifting the youth of Knoxville, nurturing future leaders grounded in faith and community service. Over the years, we have positively impacted over 30,000 children and young adults through diverse community initiatives. Each year, we engage more than 3,000 young individuals in enriching programs that emphasize faith, education, and health.

Why are tutors essential?

Our afterschool participants undertake the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment annually to identify their academic strengths and areas for improvement. Emerald Youth is committed to addressing these educational needs and bridging learning gaps. Last year, many students who received tutoring demonstrated remarkable academic progress, underscoring the importance of this role. Tutors will provide tailored support in reading and math, utilizing resources designed to meet each student's unique learning level. This personalized approach is crucial for helping students achieve their educational objectives and enhancing their overall confidence.

Where will I be working?

Tutors will be assigned to one of the JustLead program sites operated by Emerald Youth. This initiative is executed through a collaborative network of over 18 churches and faith-based organizations, aiming to cultivate a generation of urban youth who are passionate about their faith and equipped to lead their communities. Engaging and purposeful activities—ranging from academic support to health and service-learning—are conducted in these settings to fulfill our holistic mission.

What are my responsibilities?

Tutors will assist students in achieving their reading and math objectives, tailored to their grade levels and specific needs. Elementary-level tutoring will focus primarily on reading, while middle school tutoring will emphasize math skills. Comprehensive curriculum materials and resources will be provided, along with training on effective implementation.

What are the working hours?

Tutors are expected to commit 8-10 hours weekly during our afterschool program hours, typically from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Candidates should be available to work at least 3 to 4 days each week for 2-3 hours per day. The exact schedule will be coordinated based on the tutor's availability and the needs of the program.

What age group will I work with?

Tutors will generally work with groups of 3 to 6 students from elementary and middle school levels. One-on-one tutoring will be prioritized to ensure that each student receives the focused support they require. Group tutoring may occur in certain situations, depending on the candidates' qualifications and availability.

What is the compensation?

Tutors will receive a payment of $17.00 per hour.

Are there any prerequisites for this position?

Applicants must be able to commit for the entire academic year, provide in-person tutoring, and demonstrate a genuine interest in fostering the academic growth of urban youth. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build meaningful relationships with students are essential. Candidates should be open to feedback and eager to learn, with a current enrollment in post-secondary education or a college degree. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will possess prior teaching or tutoring experience, be enrolled in a teacher-preparation program, or have a background in education. Experience working with urban youth is advantageous.

Next Steps:

If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete the application questions thoroughly. We encourage you to attach your resume if available. Detailed responses will be essential for consideration, and we will reach out within a week of your application submission.
