Job Overview

A Lead Teacher at The Goddard School plays a crucial role in creating and sustaining a secure, healthy, and nurturing educational atmosphere for young learners.

In this position, the Lead Teacher collaborates closely with an Assistant Teacher and the entire educational team to ensure a cohesive learning experience.

General Qualifications

The Lead Teacher must fulfill the qualifications established by their state and adhere to the National Standards for hiring, which include:

  • Ability to hear conversational speech, with or without a hearing aid
  • Ability to see and read printed materials, with or without corrective lenses
  • Ability to communicate clearly and be understood in typical circumstances
  • Capacity to lift and carry children and items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to use limbs effectively, with or without assistive devices, including during emergency evacuations
  • Capability to manage crisis situations, particularly those involving children
  • Ability to respond promptly to emergencies
Educational Qualifications

Candidates for the Lead Teacher position must meet one or more of the following educational criteria, in addition to any state or local licensing requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Child Development
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field, including 18 semester hours of coursework related to children from birth to age 8
  • An Associate's degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or a related field
  • A current Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or Early Childhood Teaching Credential
  • Proof of enrollment in a CDA Credentialing Program or an accredited degree program in Early Childhood Education or a related field
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with a focus on young children, including coursework in Child Development
Lead Teacher Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a Lead Teacher may encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy, and nurturing learning environment
  • Designing an effective classroom layout that supports the developmental goals of the children
  • Implementing a classroom management system tailored to the children's needs
  • Ensuring all classroom equipment is well-maintained
  • Understanding and executing emergency procedures
  • Promoting healthy eating habits during meals and snacks
  • Maintaining compliance with state ratio requirements for children
  • Performing necessary cleaning tasks promptly
  • Creating and posting a classroom schedule that meets children's needs
  • Adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures
Supporting Child Development

To advance children's physical and intellectual growth, the Lead Teacher will:

  • Adapt programs to meet individual needs
  • Create a multicultural learning environment
  • Provide a variety of developmentally appropriate materials
  • Engage with children to support play, exploration, and learning
  • Encourage communication among children and faculty
  • Establish a print-rich environment to foster literacy
  • Encourage creativity through various mediums
  • Balance teacher-directed and child-directed activities
  • Facilitate both active and quiet play opportunities
  • Integrate enrichment resources into lesson plans

To support each child's social and emotional growth, the Lead Teacher will:

  • Encourage family involvement in the learning process
