Job Title: Senior Energy Specialist

Join the World Bank Group in our mission to end extreme poverty and promote sustainable development. We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Energy Specialist to support our efforts in energy access and clean energy transition initiatives in West and Central Africa.

About the Role

The Senior Energy Specialist will work with country teams to develop and implement Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) projects, focusing on scaling up mini-grid and off-grid solar markets in West Africa. The role will involve leading dialogue with governments, private sector, and development partners to accelerate DRE investment and deployment, leveraging private sector financing in the region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement DRE projects in West Africa, focusing on scaling up mini-grid and off-grid solar markets.
  • Lead dialogue with governments, private sector, and development partners to accelerate DRE investment and deployment.
  • Collaborate with teams across the World Bank Group to develop and provide technical expertise and strategic guidance on innovative financial and de-risking instruments for DRE projects.
  • Work with private sector developers on decentralized energy solutions, including inter-connected mini-grid, isolated mini-grids, solar rooftops, and solar home systems.
  • Advise governments on overcoming regulatory, financial, and political challenges in implementing DRE solutions in West African countries.
  • Drive innovation in DRE business models, particularly in areas such as solar irrigation, cold chain for farmers, and electrification for schools and health facilities.
  • Contribute to the development of least-cost national electrification plans that integrate both grid and off-grid solutions.
  • Support the implementation of the Distributed Access with Renewable Energy Scale Up (DARES) Platform in West Africa.
Requirements
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field, such as renewable energy, electrical engineering, or energy economics.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in the energy access sector, with substantial private sector and operational management experience in the DRE subsector.
  • Demonstrated expertise in DRE technologies, business models, and financing mechanisms.
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory, financial, and political landscape affecting DRE deployment in West Africa.
  • Proven track record in driving innovation and developing successful DRE projects in challenging environments.
  • Experience in working with governments, international organizations, and private sector stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and team leadership skills.
  • Fluency in English, with knowledge of French desirable.
