Clinical Laboratory Specialist

Position Responsibilities and Performance Standards:

1. 15% Quality Control - Quality Assurance Adherence

A. Proficient in quality control protocols to ensure the precision of analyses conducted and regularly monitors QC processes.

B. Familiar with standard patient ranges and capable of identifying tests or controls that fall outside acceptable limits, along with corrective measures.

C. Ensure all corrective actions are implemented whenever testing systems diverge from established laboratory performance criteria.

D. Guarantee that no patient samples are processed until controls are validated and no results are communicated until the testing system is confirmed to be operational.

E. Participate in proficiency testing equivalent to patient samples and achieve satisfactory outcomes.

F. Adhere to CLIA regulations.

2. 5% Supply Management

A. Evaluate vendor pricing for supplies to procure at the most economical rates.

B. Submit purchase orders and approved packing slips to the finance department promptly.

C. Oversee inventory to ensure the laboratory is equipped with essential items for specimen evaluation.

3. 5% Equipment Maintenance

Conduct maintenance on designated analyzers as specified in operational manuals and documentation.

4. 20% Specimen Collection and Preparation

Exhibit expertise in various blood collection techniques.

Understand the specimens required for ordered tests.

Input test requests into LabDaq.

Utilize sterile methods and appropriate personal protective equipment.

Demonstrate skill in phlebotomy.

Centrifuge and prepare specimens accurately for testing.

Complete and dispatch documentation for specimens sent for external analysis.

5. 55% Specimen Evaluation

A. Conduct evaluations on specimens for all laboratory tests performed internally.

B. Review all findings prior to releasing them to healthcare providers.

C. Alert physicians to critical results and document them accordingly.

D. Repeat any tests that meet the criteria for retesting or appear questionable.

E. Monitor results for patterns or shifts.

F. Initiate secondary testing if necessary after reviewing results.

G. Exercise independent judgment and discretion in reporting and disseminating results.

H. Organize effectively and work efficiently with a high degree of accuracy.

Job Qualifications:

Education: Associate degree in laboratory science or MLT from an accredited institution or successful completion of the NCA, ASCP, or AMT certification.

Experience: Completion of clinical rotations in relevant departments.

***MLT Certification preferred or a Bachelor's degree in Biology.

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

• Associate degree in a related field preferred.

• Graduation from an accredited MLT program required.
