The electric power sector is experiencing a significant evolution. Influenced by both state and federal energy regulations, alongside shifting economic factors and advancements in emerging technologies, the Transmission System Planning division is crucial in facilitating this change.

The Senior Engineer for Transmission System Strategy will engage in comprehensive technical modeling and analysis, assume leadership on projects, and undertake tasks necessitating expertise in the following areas. The Senior Engineer should possess substantial experience in modeling and planning the bulk electric power system, demonstrate strong technical capabilities for long-term load forecasting, testing, and planning, and utilize both company and industry data to predict optimal designs for infrastructure enhancements, including AC transmission lines, battery storage, FACTS devices, and Inverter-Based Resources (IBR). Studies will adhere to the standards set by Eversource, ISO-New England, Northeast Power Coordination Council (NPCC), and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and conduct reliability and strategic scenario-based planning studies across a variety of existing and projected system conditions. These assessments will cover voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limits, short circuits, electromagnetic transients, and stability evaluations.
  • Utilize technical expertise to provide sound engineering insights for developing effective, reliable, and cost-efficient solutions.
  • Collaborate with regional and industry stakeholders to review data and assumptions critically.
  • Engage with ISO-New England, local transmission owners, and various Eversource departments, including engineering, substation technical, and operations, to address electric system needs and challenges while supporting reliable future growth.
  • Document and present findings and recommendations, including data analysis, report generation, and summary presentations.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to establish long-term planning criteria for integrating and facilitating new technologies, such as photovoltaic solar (PV), electric vehicles (EV), and battery storage.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Represent Eversource in regional, national, and international committees and working groups.
  • Exhibit self-sufficiency and support the Eversource team by demonstrating accountability, consistency, and collaboration across departments.
  • Mentor and provide technical training to fellow engineers.
  • Be prepared to respond to emergency situations as needed during adverse weather or system conditions.
Technical Expertise/Skills/Education/Certifications:
  • Advanced understanding of electrical theory as it pertains to electric power supply system planning.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in generating results using power system modeling and simulation software for steady-state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transients.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of HVDC and inverter-based resource parameters and modeling, with extensive simulation experience in weak grid environments.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in essential software, including PSSE, PSCAD, and Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Visio, SharePoint, OneDrive). Programming skills in Python and VBA are highly desirable. Familiarity with simulation software such as ASPEN Oneliner, EMTP (ATP), TARA, and PI Processbook is also preferred.
  • Experience in applying NERC TPL, NPCC, and ISO-NE planning procedures.
  • Adhere to Eversource's Codes of Conduct, Business Ethics, Environmental, and Diversity Policies.
Education:
  • A Master's degree in an engineering or science discipline is required.
  • A Ph.D. in engineering is preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of ten years of specialized experience in transmission planning, software simulations, and IBR modeling is required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License is preferred.
