Position Overview

Role Purpose: The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is tasked with designing, leading, and managing therapeutic recreation initiatives tailored for individuals in behavioral health care, utilizing evidence-based methodologies. This role involves providing group therapy, expressive arts therapies, recreational activities, and psychoeducation in conjunction with the interdisciplinary treatment team. The Recreation Specialist also oversees Activity Aides, Music Therapists, and other staff members, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality performance indicators for the department.

Primary Responsibilities:

Maintain comprehensive documentation of service delivery, including assessments, Master Treatment Plans, and daily Progress Notes. Review and co-sign documentation prepared by Activity Specialists. Create and implement specialized therapeutic programs for both inpatient and outpatient clients experiencing various mental health challenges. Supervise Recreation Therapists, Music Therapists, Activity Specialists, and Lifeguards as necessary. Formulate and update departmental Policies and Procedures as required. Monitor and evaluate quality performance indicators for the department on a quarterly basis. Manage inventory, supply levels, and procurement of necessary equipment and materials. Organize the scheduling of all recreational facilities within the healthcare setting. Assume the responsibilities of the S.T.S. Director during their absence. Oversee and assess the Internship program. Supervise special events organized by the STS department.Clientele Served: Inpatients, partial hospitalization patients, and associated agencies.

Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Familiarity with age-appropriate recreational and music activities, with the ability to adapt these activities to meet the needs of specific populations and treatment plans.Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Therapeutic Recreation or Music Therapy. Master’s degree in Recreational Therapy is preferred.Licenses and Certifications:

Current Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification is required. Music Therapist Board Certified designation is preferred. Must possess current High and Low Elements Facilitator Certification or obtain it within 90 days of employment.Experience:

Minimum of one year of experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating recreation/music therapy programs within psychiatric or healthcare environments. Experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and military personnel in psychiatric and/or healthcare settings.Physical Requirements:

* Ability to walk and stand for extended periods.

* Capability to lift items weighing between 25-50 pounds.

* Frequent pushing, pulling, kneeling, grasping, twisting, and bending is required.

* Repetitive hand use is necessary.

* Hearing and vision must be correctable to within normal limits.

* Ability to work outdoors for certain periods.
