Position Overview

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Academic Support Specialist within the Comin Up Gang Intervention Program.

As an Academic Support Specialist, your primary responsibility will be to deliver educational guidance and assistance to students across various subjects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting individual and group tutoring sessions to enhance student understanding.
  • Providing homework assistance aimed at improving academic performance and GPA.
  • Offering instruction and tutoring for state standardized assessments to ensure students meet proficiency benchmarks.
  • Facilitating SAT/ACT preparation to help youth achieve competitive scores for college admissions.

You will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with administrative protocols, maintaining safety at the assigned location, and serving as a positive role model for participants. Services will be provided on-site during program hours, with potential for virtual support as needed. Adherence to all safety procedures and protocols is mandatory.

This program operates in economically disadvantaged areas, often characterized by challenging environments. The work atmosphere may vary from loud to moderately loud, requiring adaptability. The position involves working closely with at-risk youth, including those affiliated with gangs.

The Comin Up Gang Intervention Program serves youth aged 12-18 in Fort Worth, focusing on delivering needs-based services and activities aimed at reducing gang violence and fostering positive community change.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of 6 months of experience working with youth, whether in a professional or volunteer capacity.

Essential Skills:

  • Availability to work evenings and nights (7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, two nights per week).
  • Ability to assess and address the needs of students effectively.
  • Capability to serve as a positive role model.
  • Skill in building rapport and fostering relationships with youth.
  • Proficiency in facilitating, teaching, or instructing.
  • Knowledge of GED requirements and foundational reading and math skills.
  • Familiarity with tutoring or teaching methodologies.
  • Understanding of technology and software, including tablets and virtual meeting tools.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid is required.
  • Must successfully pass all required background checks and drug screenings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of a teaching certification.
  • Bilingual abilities are advantageous.
  • Experience or knowledge of the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement, either nationally or locally.
Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be determined based on qualifications:

  • $15.00 per hour without teaching certification.
  • $19.40 per hour with teaching certification.
