Job Summary

The Assistant Habilitation Specialist plays a vital role in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in a classroom setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all unit activities promote social responsibility, independence, dignity, and continued growth for each individual.
  • Implement goals designed to maximize each participant's level of independence, as determined by the IDT.
  • Provide training in activities of daily living and perform these activities for individuals requiring total support, as needed.
  • Monitor participants' progress by collecting and documenting performance data.
  • Serve as a positive role model for participants in various program and community settings.
  • Provide behavioral interventions when necessary, following the least restrictive OPWDD-approved techniques.
  • Must successfully complete and perform all techniques required in AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid.
  • Implement the established activity schedule for each consumer.
  • Ensure that the unit is clean, safe, stimulating, and appropriately decorated at all times.
  • Supervise participants' lunch periods, including feeding, assisting with food, and providing support.
  • Participate in various appointments for assigned participants as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Caseload and location are subject to change.

Requirements

A valid NYS driver's license is required, although this may be waived for non-driving Assistant Habilitation Specialists and relief staff who will not be driving agency vehicles. A High School Diploma/GED is required, and experience working with people with developmental disabilities is preferred.
