Job Summary

VDOT's Staunton District is seeking highly qualified Highway Maintenance Operators to join their maintenance team. As a qualified candidate, you will work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and performing roadway maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributors, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc.
  • Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.
  • Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road.
  • Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection.

Requirements

  • Experience in roadway maintenance or construction.
  • Possess knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction.
  • Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoe, etc.
  • Able to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Skilled in using hand and power tools.
  • Valid driver's license required at hire.
  • A Commercial Driver's License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.

Additional Considerations

  • Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements at time of hire.
  • Experience in heavy equipment operation.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident response and clean-up.

Working Conditions

Emergency response may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. You will be required to work in various weather conditions, including severe weather, and perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
