Position Summary

The Expedition Leader plays a vital role in a team dedicated to inspiring guests and enhancing their understanding of the regions visited during their cruise. This position is overseen by the Expedition Leader and involves collaboration with a team of 2-7 members, alongside the entire vessel crew. Key responsibilities include guiding and interpreting various topics such as geology, geography, glaciology, marine biology, natural history, cultural history, and local flora and fauna. The leader will guide guests on hikes, skiff tours, snorkeling, camping, paddle boarding, and kayaking excursions, ensuring a memorable vacation experience through knowledge sharing, guiding activities, and exceptional customer service, with a strong focus on safety.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience in naturalist interpretation or environmental education, including formal presentations for groups of up to 90 participants.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills, including the development of interpretive materials and presentations.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in natural or cultural history, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of one year of professional experience leading small groups in remote outdoor settings and on water.
  • Outstanding customer service and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong preference for teamwork.
  • Previous experience in the small ship cruise industry is highly desirable.

Required Certifications and Licenses:

  • Valid Passport
  • CPR / First Aid / AED Certification
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
  • USCG 25T Masters License
  • Medical Certificate or Physical Examination Report
  • STCW Crowd Management (provided by the company)
  • Security Awareness or VPDSD (provided by the company)
  • Costa Rica or Panama Guide Certification (specific to native individuals)
  • MARSEC Card (provided by the company)

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead hiking and kayaking expeditions in remote wilderness areas, adhering to safety standards and employing route-finding skills.
  • Collaborate within a cohesive team under the Expedition Leader, emphasizing communication and teamwork.
  • Confidently guide groups of up to 20 guests in the field and on the water, ensuring an enjoyable experience even when excursions do not go as planned, with a strong focus on customer service and safety.
  • Provide hands-on interpretation and formal onboard presentations that integrate into a week-long interpretive program, utilizing interactive tools such as maps, charts, and guidebooks.
  • Develop and deliver educational presentations on environmental science, history, or other relevant topics to groups of up to 90 guests as assigned.
  • Enhance the guest experience by encouraging observation of the surrounding environment, promoting exploration and appreciation of nature.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of all expedition equipment, including kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear.
  • Assist with general shipboard tasks during the operating season.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor and appearance among crew and guests at all times, while living in a close-knit community setting.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Crew members live in shared accommodations with 4 to 8 individuals per room.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week for 6 to 8 weeks at a time, with 2 to 3 weeks off.
  • Frequent physical activity including bending, reaching, and lifting, with the ability to handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions and small spaces.

Compensation

  • Base pay of $190 per day plus a guaranteed tip of $70.
