ABOUT THE ROLE

Lead Wetlands Environmental Scientist | Wethersfield, CT

VHB is expanding its environmental team in Wethersfield, CT, and is looking for a Lead Wetlands Environmental Scientist to guide our established natural science division. This role presents a unique opportunity to enhance and lead our team while addressing the needs of renewable energy and infrastructure projects. Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed wetland delineations utilizing a three-parameter approach, assessing hydrology, dominant plant species, and hydric soil indicators.
  • Prepare comprehensive wetland functional assessments and analyze potential impacts of various projects.
  • Coordinate the development of NEPA documentation.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of environmental scientists.
  • Evaluate, design, monitor, and assess wetland mitigation sites.
  • Document soil profiles adhering to USDA NRCS standards.
  • Plan for erosion and sediment control.
  • Engage with environmental regulatory agencies for consultations.
  • Prepare and submit state and federal environmental permit applications.
  • Oversee construction monitoring to ensure compliance with permit conditions.
  • Manage complex permitting projects and tasks effectively.
  • Lead meetings with clients, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to identify needs and resolve issues.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

  • In-depth knowledge of southern New England flora and the ability to identify plant species using floristic keys.
  • Understanding of southern New England fauna and capability to assess wildlife habitat quality.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in field settings under varying weather conditions.
  • Highly motivated team player with a proactive approach.
  • Advanced technical writing proficiency.
  • Thorough understanding of state and federal environmental regulations, particularly in water resources permitting.
  • Mandatory proficiency in preparing permit applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship capabilities.
  • Strong collaborative skills within a team environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, ecology, soil science, or a related field.
  • Master's degree in a relevant environmental discipline preferred (may substitute for one year of experience).
  • 15+ years of professional experience in environmental science with a focus on wetlands and permitting.
  • Preferred experience in team management.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary to support projects.
  • Ability to independently manage projects and serve as a task lead across various company disciplines.
  • Certification as a Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or equivalent credentials required.
