ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Lead Environmental Scientist specializing in Wetlands, you will play a pivotal role in our environmental team at Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. This position offers a unique opportunity to guide and enhance our established natural science team, focusing on renewable energy and infrastructure projects. Our mission is to improve transportation, enrich communities, and foster economic growth while ensuring environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct wetland delineations utilizing a three-parameter approach, including field indicators of hydrology, dominant plant species identification, and hydric soil assessment in southern New England.
  • Prepare comprehensive wetland functional assessments and evaluate potential impacts of projects.
  • Coordinate and develop NEPA documentation.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of environmental scientists.
  • Evaluate, design, monitor, and assess wetland mitigation sites.
  • Prepare detailed soil profile descriptions in accordance with USDA NRCS standards.
  • Plan for erosion and sediment control.
  • Engage with environmental regulatory agencies for consultations.
  • Prepare state and federal environmental permit applications.
  • Oversee construction monitoring to ensure compliance with permit conditions.
  • Manage complex permitting projects and tasks effectively.
  • Lead and participate in meetings with clients, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to address their needs and resolve issues.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong familiarity with the flora and fauna of southern New England, with the ability to identify plant species using floristic keys.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in field settings under varying weather conditions.
  • Highly motivated team player with advanced technical writing capabilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations, particularly in water resources permitting.
  • Proficiency in preparing permit applications is essential.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship abilities.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, ecology, soil science, or a related field.
  • A Master's degree in a similar environmental discipline is preferred (may substitute for one year of experience).
  • 15+ years of professional experience in environmental science with a focus on wetlands and permitting.
  • Preferred experience in team management.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary to support projects.
  • Ability to independently manage projects and lead tasks across various company disciplines.
  • Certification as a Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or similar credentials is required.
