Position Overview: The Nursing Support Technician is responsible for delivering patient care and assisting with non-patient care tasks within their designated scope of practice, all under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse.


Key Responsibilities:

Duties encompass but are not limited to: assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), monitoring vital signs, managing intake and output (I&O), conducting EKGs, documenting vital signs and I&O, performing basic dressing changes, collecting specimens, aiding with meals, running errands, transporting patients, handling medications or specimens, assisting with patient mobility, managing urinary drainage care (including indwelling, external, and suprapubic), supporting colostomy care, applying binders, weighing patients, and assisting healthcare providers during procedures and physical examinations, along with other assigned responsibilities.


Essential Functions:
  • Adheres to the performance standards, policies, and behaviors established by the organization.
  • Executes tasks as outlined in the job summary in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Incorporates patient rights into daily work practices.
  • Employs current infection control methods.
  • Engages in Performance Improvement Initiatives.
  • Utilizes effective decision-making processes, including recognition and prioritization related to patient care and unit-based issues.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Completes all competency requirements and attends mandatory in-services and staff meetings as needed.
  • Implements cost containment practices.
  • Complies with all organizational policies and procedures, including dress code, code of conduct, customer service standards, attendance, and submission of annual physical.

Performs additional related duties as assigned.


Education & Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in a hospital setting or with patient care is preferred.
  • Successful completion of the Nursing Support Technician Orientation.
  • BLS certification (through the American Heart Association) is mandatory for all Nursing Support Technicians.
  • Nursing Support Technicians hired prior to the specified date must obtain BLS certification within a designated timeframe.
  • Nursing Support Technicians hired thereafter must possess BLS certification upon hire or obtain it during orientation.
  • Those trained to interpret monitors are required to complete a four-day EKG course.

Physical and Mental Demands:

May encounter chemicals necessary for task completion. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are documented in the hospital's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database, accessible through the hospital's intranet.

Must be able to navigate the department and hospital consistently while addressing the needs of patients, visitors, and staff. Continuous communication with individuals of varying educational backgrounds is required, along with frequent use of computers and office equipment.

Must be capable of lifting objects up to fifty (50) pounds and moving patients of all weights with minimal assistance or using assistive devices as per the hospital's Safe Patient Handling Policy.

Must be able to quickly assess and respond to the situational needs of patients, staff, and visitors, and adapt to a high-stress environment with frequent interruptions.


Primary Population Served:

Includes but is not limited to: Neonatal, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric, Bariatric, and non-patient care populations.
