Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Interpreter Representative to join our team at NYC Health Hospitals. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will play a vital role in ensuring seamless communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Familiarize patients, family members, caregivers, and visitors with the purpose and policies of the healthcare setting and the patient representative program.
  • Conduct medical and general interpretations for staff, LEP patients, and their families.
  • Communicate clearly and accurately for both the LEP patient and/or family member and the medical provider.
  • Relay information in an accurate and concise manner, without omitting, changing, or adding information.
  • Understand a variety of regional accents and linguistic styles for the target language.
  • Assess and monitor patients' understanding of information conveyed.
  • Effectively identify cultural differences as potential communication barriers that could interfere with the exchange of information between providers, patients, and their families.
  • Record and monitor interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards.
  • Effectively communicate and demonstrate the System's acknowledgement and awareness of diverse health-related needs and concerns to patients, family members, caregivers, staff, and the community.
  • Assure appropriate and timely responsiveness of the healthcare setting in meeting patient needs.
  • Adjust to changing situations and work assignments.
  • Understand and abide by health center's policies on patient confidentiality, informed consent, non-discrimination, and by interpreter's code of ethics and standards of practice.
  • Comply with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
Requirements
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Public Administration, Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or in a healthcare specialization or related discipline.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fields such as Public Health, Public Administration, Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or social sciences, and one (1) year of paid, full-time responsible experience in an administrative, supervisory, or consultative capacity performing functions related to the coordination and delivery of patient care services or similar functions in a hospital or a healthcare setting.
  • A satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and/or experience.
