We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laser Safety Specialist to join our team at the University of Texas at Austin. As a Laser Safety Specialist, you will be responsible for providing laser safety services that promote safe and compliant facilities and ensure environmental quality for the University community.
Key Responsibilities- Compliance Review and Assurance: Participate in the laser laboratory compliance inspection program, perform routine laser laboratory onsite safety assessments, and ensure laser use environment meets State regulatory requirements and other applicable standards.
- Laser Beam Hazard Evaluations: Perform laser beam hazard evaluations, produce reports and documentation, including recommendations for protection of laser users, facilities, and the public.
- Laser Safety Program Management: Review and approve new laser purchases, collect and confirm laser emission parameters for new or current lasers, and assist in update, maintenance, and upgrade of the Laser Safety Program database files.
- Reporting and Record-Keeping: Produce reports and maintain records as appropriate, and take prompt, attentive action to address customer needs and recommendations.
- General Safety and Compliance Support: Provide general safety and compliance support to the Radiation and Laser Safety group, including support for radioactive materials, X-ray devices, radio-frequency emissions, sampling, surveys, and other activities as needed.
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited academic institution in Health Physics, Nuclear or Radiation Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Radiation Biology.
- More than four years of full-time health physics or laser safety experience at an academic research institution.
- Certified in one or more of the following: CHP, CSP, CLSO, CIH, or comparable certification.
- USDOT, ICAO, IATA Hazardous Material Shipper's Certification.
- Texas Commercial Driver License with hazardous material endorsement.
- Master's degree from an accredited academic institution in Engineering, Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
- Two years of experience in environmental health and safety compliance.
- Eligible to be certified in one of the following: Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
- Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment (furnished).
- May work in all weather conditions.
- May work in extreme temperatures.
- May work around chemical fumes.
- May work around standard office conditions.
- May work around biohazards.
- May work around chemicals.
- May work around electrical and mechanical hazards.
- Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
- Use of manual dexterity.
- Climbing of stairs.
- Climbing of ladders.
- Lifting and moving.
- May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions.
- May be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
- May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels.
- May be required to lift up to 50lbs.
- Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull, and bend.
- May be required to operate job-related equipment.
- May be required to perform elevated work.
- Occasional work from ladders and/or scaffolds.
- May work around lasers, radiation, and magnetic fields.
- Participate in on-call program.
$61,032 + depending on qualifications
