Your Role

The ideal Feed Mill Equipment Maintenance Specialist possesses a comprehensive understanding of and is accountable for managing all facets of maintenance and repair of machinery and mechanical systems. This includes, but is not limited to, screw conveyors, bucket belt elevators, drag conveyors, boilers, pellet mills, hammer mills, VFD drives, and other specific equipment pertinent to the mechanical operations of the feed mill. The role involves evaluating, repairing, and ensuring meticulous maintenance records are upheld.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct daily maintenance tasks in designated equipment areas and establish any additional maintenance schedules as necessary.
  • Adhere to standard operating maintenance protocols while performing all maintenance activities, including the replacement, adjustment, and installation of feed mill equipment.
  • Maintain vigilance regarding maintenance issues and devise strategies to rectify existing problems while minimizing future maintenance-related challenges and unscheduled downtimes.
  • Develop and enhance a cost-effective Preventative Maintenance Program, collaborating with the maintenance supervisor to achieve management objectives.
  • Establish and communicate consistent guidelines for parts replacement or repair.
  • Encourage an active Safety Awareness Program, implementing clean housekeeping practices for tools, equipment, and facilities.
  • Oversee and maintain all feed mill machinery.
  • Ensure compliance with all procedures during repair activities.
  • Adhere to all environmental regulations and procedures endorsed by Smithfield Foods HPD.
  • Adjust maintenance work procedures and schedules to align with production timelines.
  • Maintain shift maintenance activity reports and track maintenance records using the Methods system, including preventative maintenance, weekly bearing maintenance, parts replacement, etc.
  • Manage critical parts inventory based on usage and maintenance requirements.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks as directed by management.
  • Ensure the safety of all employees and company assets.
  • Obtain and maintain necessary certifications (forklift, LOTO, confined space, etc.) for all maintenance personnel.
  • Understand and comply with company EMS policies and procedures in the execution of job responsibilities.
  • Promptly report all environmental and food safety concerns to the mill manager.
  • Familiarize oneself with the company's emergency notification procedures and review that policy at the work site.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and a minimum of 1 year of successful industrial maintenance experience required.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting, repairing, and assembling feed mill equipment.
  • Electrician license is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing electrical issues, including solid-state circuitry, 110V control circuits, lighting circuits, VFD, soft-start drives, and 3-phase circuitry.
  • Ability to read and communicate in English.
  • Capable of interpreting documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
  • Experience with pneumatic systems, including compressors, cylinders, and solenoid valve maintenance.
  • Experience with liquid systems, including positive displacement pump rebuilding, metering system calibration, automatic valves, and plumbing.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • While performing the duties of this position, the team member is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
  • Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and communicate verbally.
  • Must support the mission of producing high-quality pellet feed.
  • Must be able to work with and around various chemicals and feed ingredients.
  • Must tolerate grain dust, chemical odors, and frequently noisy conditions.
  • Must endure extreme seasonal temperature variations (hot to cold).
