The Retail Operations Leader (ROL) serves as the primary authority for all aspects of store management and is responsible for the overall success of the retail location. The ROL is tasked with effectively mentoring, guiding, and developing a high-achieving team that meets sales targets, adheres to brand standards, and ensures operational excellence. The ROL utilizes sound judgment to make decisions within the company's framework and collaborates with the Area/District Manager when necessary. All team members in the store report directly to the ROL.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Inspires and motivates the retail team by articulating a clear vision and purpose that aligns with the core values of Build-A-Bear Workshop.
  • Exemplifies the Experience First standards and behaviors consistently.
  • Develops and communicates actionable plans that optimize outcomes and ensure effective execution of all initiatives.
  • Delegates responsibilities effectively among management and team members.
  • Maintains a positive and encouraging communication style to foster productivity and ownership.
  • Actively seeks opportunities for personal growth and development to enhance leadership capabilities and individual performance.

Drives for Results

  • Evaluates business performance and makes strategic decisions in real-time to drive success.
  • Maximizes profitability by achieving sales goals and managing expenses in alignment with company expectations.
  • Energizes team members as a role model Leader on Duty to ensure adequate coverage, exceptional customer service, completion of daily tasks, and adherence to company standards.
  • Cultivates a highly satisfied and loyal customer base through engagement, conversion, and capturing customer information in the loyalty program.

Builds High-Performing Teams

  • Identifies, recruits, hires, and retains a high-performing management and associate team.
  • Collaborates with the Area/District Manager to assess staffing needs and maintains a pool of qualified candidates.
  • Ensures proper onboarding and ongoing training of all associates through effective planning and follow-up to achieve Experience First, sales, merchandising, and operational objectives.
  • Regularly evaluates and provides constructive feedback on skills, job responsibilities, and success characteristics through real-time coaching and performance reviews.
  • Promotes employee engagement by recognizing and rewarding outstanding performance.
  • Develops succession plans to ensure career advancement opportunities for all associates; encourages internal mobility.
  • Addresses performance issues or conflicts promptly and consistently.
  • Ensures clear and consistent communication across the team through one-on-ones, management meetings, and all-store gatherings.

Operates with Excellence

  • Monitors and analyzes sales trends to accurately forecast labor needs and prepare weekly schedules that align with business demands.
  • Manages payroll and timekeeping to ensure compliance.
  • Ensures the store is always prepared for operations by following established opening and closing procedures.
  • Operates and maintains all IT systems in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to and enforces all store security and cash management policies and procedures.
  • Understands and ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations governing store operations.

Executes the Brand Story

  • Oversees the efficient handling of all merchandise, including shipment receipt, processing, floor sets, markdown optimization, and replenishment while maintaining backroom standard operating procedures.
  • Implements visual presentation standards using company guidelines and store presentation tools.
  • Maintains high standards of cleanliness and maintenance through effective training and delegation.

Qualifications:

  • Two to four years of comprehensive store management experience with a proven track record in a customer-focused environment, preferably in specialty retail or the restaurant sector.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; college degree preferred.
  • Ambitious and results-oriented.
  • Exceptional leadership and sales skills.
