Education:
A minimum of a High School diploma coupled with three to four years of specialized training in a healthcare environment, demonstrating proficiency in registration and patient access functions.

Qualifications/Experience:
At least 2 years of experience with hospital insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, HMO's, and PPO's. Proficient typing and computer skills are essential. Familiarity with local managed care plans and their contractual terms is required.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to self-manage and exercise independent judgment in situations necessitating follow-up and discussions with physicians, insurance plans, and hospital personnel to ensure the completion of necessary authorizations and approvals for payment services.

Additional qualifications include:

  • 2-3 years of specialized training in a healthcare setting with proven knowledge of registration functions, insurance verification, and the authorization and pre-certification processes.
  • Ability to delegate straightforward tasks to others.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding customer service abilities.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is required.
  • Capability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.

The candidate should exhibit enthusiastic, friendly, and patient-centered customer service skills. Exemplary communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary, with comfort in engaging with patients via phone and in person to convey essential information.

The role requires a collaborative team player who can work effectively across departments and with clinical staff. The ability to multitask using computer systems while delivering the highest level of care and attention to patients is crucial.

Position Summary:
Responsibilities of the Patient Access Specialist include:

  • Collecting demographic, insurance, and medical information to ensure accurate and complete registration.
  • Conducting insurance verification, data collection, and documentation.
  • Assessing medical necessity for services based on established medical criteria.
  • Identifying patient financial responsibilities and collecting applicable payments.
  • Serving as a liaison to all internal and external customers to facilitate access to hospital services.
  • Providing guidance to Patient Access staff in the absence of the manager or in collaboration with the manager.
  • Assigning tasks to Patient Access staff.
  • Exhibiting excellent written and verbal communication skills, alongside strong customer service capabilities.
