POSITION SUMMARY

The Clinical Staff Nurse is a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) dedicated to delivering exceptional nursing care and managing patient treatment.

Reporting to the Manager of Medical-Surgical Telemetry, the Clinical Staff Nurse is accountable for organizing, planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high-quality, individualized patient and family-centered care based on the Watson Model of Care for a designated group of patients. This includes identifying and addressing special needs and considerations related to age and population-specific awareness.

This role requires a comprehensive understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that the employee will exhibit behaviors consistent with the core values of the organization and support the strategic plan and goals related to quality and performance improvement initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The nurse employs the nursing process as a problem-solving model, utilizing their expertise to anticipate and meet the needs of patients and families.

Nursing assessments are focused on areas most beneficial for the patient population or situation. The nurse recognizes subtle changes in clinical conditions, evaluates, and appropriately modifies the care plan.

The nurse is responsible for prioritizing and organizing patient care, ensuring follow-through with planned interventions.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care tailored to the age and needs of the patients served on the assigned unit. Consistently applies current literature and research findings, along with critical thinking skills, to make informed clinical decisions.

Engages in the Hospital's Patient Satisfaction initiatives when interacting with patients, families, and colleagues. The nurse develops and maintains a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship throughout the healthcare continuum.

Respect for patient rights is fundamental to the nurse-patient relationship, as reflected in our values and mission. Conducts hourly rounding on patients and communicates using the SBAR method in all hand-off situations.

Documentation Responsibilities

Performs documentation of patient care, including assessments, interdisciplinary plans of care (IPOC), implementation, evaluation, and adherence to the Watson Model of Care, following unit-specific and hospital documentation policies and procedures.

Anticipates variables affecting patient comfort and adjusts physical and psychosocial interventions accordingly, employing a variety of modalities.

Assists patients and families in maximizing their sense of control and actively participating in their recovery. Demonstrates a commitment to addressing the learning needs of patients and families, utilizing appropriate resources to achieve positive patient outcomes.

Collaborates with Care Managers during the patient's stay and takes a proactive role in coordinating interdisciplinary discharge planning for specific patient populations.

Reviews all orders on patients and communicates changes in patient conditions with physicians and other team members. Contacts the physician promptly regarding significant changes in patient conditions, collaborates professionally for required orders, and follows up with revised care plans.

Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions and documents outcomes in the IPOC. Utilizes patient classification systems according to established standards.

Demonstrates the ability to plan, supervise, instruct, and evaluate ancillary nursing personnel, float staff, and new hires. Ensures that evaluations are completed each shift for registry and float staff.

Maintains a professional appearance by adhering to the dress code, wearing the hospital ID badge, and promoting proper identification standards for peers and staff.

Ensures a safe and clean environment that complies with regulatory standards, including Patient Safety Goals.

Participates in the implementation of the unit-specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan, completes monitoring forms, and reports findings to the Clinical Unit Supervisor and Nurse Manager.

Assists with the orientation of new employees, unit setup of equipment and supplies, and provides basic hygiene and activities of daily living (ADLs) to patients.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred. Associate in Nursing, Nursing Diploma, or equivalent acceptable. Internal candidates who have successfully completed the MLKCH Versant Nurse Residency Program will be considered.

B. Qualifications/Experience: Minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience. A minimum of 12 months of Med/Surg/Telemetry or Critical Care nursing experience preferred, based on regulatory guidelines and standard practices, or at the discretion of the Manager/Director.

Current California Nursing license, Basic EKG Competence, Certification in Progressive Critical Care Nursing preferred, Certification in Medical/Surgical Nursing preferred.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge: Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish), basic computer skills, Dysrhythmia Course certificate preferred, Electronic Medical Record experience preferred, Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card within 90 days of hire or requirement notification.
