Position Summary:

The Indirect Tax Team at Walmart plays a pivotal role in the organization’s financial operations, emphasizing compliance, operational efficiency, and audit functions related to sales and use tax.

As a leading market player, Walmart is dedicated to revolutionizing its comprehensive tax calculation systems and processes, embarking on a transformative journey to centralize and modernize tax engines and compliance reporting.

The team is tasked with ensuring the precision of transaction taxes applied to customers and members across Walmart and Sam's Club's domestic operations.

With the responsibility of reporting and remitting over $21 billion in transactional taxes across numerous jurisdictions annually, the Indirect Tax Team also provides critical insights to key tax policy stakeholders.

As a senior manager within this dynamic team, you will have the unique opportunity to contribute to a transformative journey and influence the management of sales tax at Walmart.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with business units to provide guidance on the sales tax implications of new revenue streams, ensuring clear communication of tax issues to non-tax professionals.
  • Engage with the tax data and technology teams to develop and implement both short- and long-term strategies for tax calculation services.
  • Enhance automation processes for item classification to accurately determine taxability and improve the customer tax exemption shopping experience.
  • Maintain robust internal controls over sales tax calculations, working closely with internal audit teams and presenting findings to external auditors.
  • Drive process improvements within the team’s workflows and enforce KPIs to measure effectiveness and responsiveness.
  • Conduct thorough tax research and provide expert advice on multi-state sales tax issues.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members, offering constructive feedback and identifying growth opportunities.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting or a related field; a CPA or advanced degree in Taxation is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in Indirect Tax, ideally with a background in retail, Big 4, or mid-tier firms.
  • At least 3 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Experience in establishing and executing standard operating procedures for Sales Tax Operations in a collaborative environment.
  • Expertise in advising on sales and use tax implications of mergers and acquisitions.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP systems.
  • Strong knowledge of various tax types, including sales and use tax, product tax, excise tax, and transaction tax.
  • Proficiency in tax data analysis and utilizing data to enhance tax strategies.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
