As a pivotal member of Walmart's Indirect Tax Team, you will play a vital role in the financial operations of the organization, focusing on compliance, operational efficiency, and audit functions related to sales and use tax. Walmart, as a leading market player, is dedicated to enhancing its tax calculation systems and processes, embarking on a transformative journey to centralize and modernize tax operations and compliance reporting.

The Indirect Tax Team is responsible for the accurate assessment of transaction taxes applied to customers and members across Walmart and Sam's Club operations. With an annual obligation to report and remit over $21 billion in transactional taxes across numerous jurisdictions, the team also provides essential insights to key tax policy stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with various business units to provide guidance on the sales tax implications of new revenue streams, ensuring clear communication of tax issues to non-tax professionals.
  • Engage with the tax data and technology teams to establish and implement both short- and long-term strategic roadmaps, focusing on automation and efficiency in tax classification and customer tax exemption processes.
  • Maintain robust internal controls over sales tax calculations, working closely with internal audit teams and presenting findings to external auditors.
  • Drive process enhancements within the team's current workflows.
  • Establish and enforce key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess team effectiveness and responsiveness to business needs.
  • Conduct comprehensive tax research and provide expert advice on multi-state sales tax issues.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members, offering constructive feedback and identifying growth opportunities.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in accounting or a related discipline; a CPA or advanced degree in Taxation is advantageous.
  • Over 6 years of experience in Indirect Tax, ideally with exposure to retail environments or large accounting firms.
  • A minimum of 3 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Experience in developing and implementing standard operating procedures for Sales Tax Operations in a collaborative environment.
  • Knowledge of sales and use tax implications in mergers and acquisitions.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP systems.
  • Experience in analyzing sales tax language in proposed legislation.
  • Strong understanding of various tax types, including sales and use tax, product tax, excise tax, and transaction tax.
  • Proficient in tax data analysis and leveraging insights to enhance tax strategies.
  • Experience navigating complex tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities.
