Position Overview

As a key member of Walmart's Fuel Tax Team, you will be responsible for overseeing the administration of various federal, state, and local taxes related to the wholesale and retail sale of fuel products. This role is crucial in managing an extensive tax obligation exceeding $2.5 billion annually, ensuring compliance and providing strategic insights to enhance business operations.

Key Responsibilities

In this managerial position, your primary duties will include:

  • Overseeing the AvaTax Excise software to ensure accurate real-time tax calculations on fuel transactions, facilitating effective reconciliation and compliance.
  • Managing the Avalara Returns Excise software for the preparation of fuel tax returns, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Utilizing advanced data analysis tools such as SAP-BI, Excel, and PowerBI to generate performance reports and reconcile tax returns with financial records.
  • Handling tax audits and inquiries, negotiating with tax authorities, and resolving any disputes that may arise.
  • Conducting thorough research on complex tax issues and advising internal stakeholders on the tax implications of various business transactions.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with both internal teams and external partners, including tax consultants and government officials.
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations, while monitoring legislative changes and communicating their impact to the organization.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance indirect tax processes and improve operational efficiency.
  • Mentoring junior team members, providing guidance and support for their professional development.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field; advanced qualifications such as CPA or CMI-Sales Tax are advantageous.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in the fuel industry, with a comprehensive understanding of fuel taxation.
  • In-depth knowledge of motor fuel tax regulations, particularly within the bulk transfer terminal system.
  • Experience with tax software solutions, specifically AvaTax Excise and Avalara Returns Excise.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to leverage data for strategic tax planning.
  • Proven experience navigating complex tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership abilities.
