Role Overview:

The Traffic Operations Coordinator will play a crucial role in managing roadway congestion across Western NC, addressing both planned and unplanned traffic incidents such as construction activities, vehicle accidents, and severe weather conditions. Utilizing advanced technologies, you will monitor traffic incidents, mitigate their impacts, and liaise with emergency services and the traveling public.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize congestion maps, traffic cameras, and responder radios to detect and monitor traffic incidents.
  • Assess incident characteristics and determine appropriate responses based on traffic impacts and available resources.
  • Document incident details and response actions in real-time.
  • Publish traveler information on our website to assist motorists in avoiding affected roadways.
  • Activate electronic message boards to alert drivers of hazardous conditions and reroute traffic as necessary.
  • Communicate critical information to emergency responders and NCDOT in real-time.
  • Coordinate with NCDOT field staff and dispatch incident management assistance patrols.
  • Manage statewide alerts for missing persons and law enforcement notifications.
  • Handle weather-related information and roadway conditions during severe weather events.
  • Collaborate with DOT agencies from neighboring states and serve as a regional contact for traffic operations.
  • Research and review planned construction and special events to ensure effective traffic management.
  • Execute response plans for both planned and unplanned incidents.
  • Conduct routine tests on devices and systems to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Six months of experience in a dispatch center or similar environment.
  • Experience in roles involving public interaction and telephone responsibilities is advantageous.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in communication.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure under pressure.
  • Aptitude for geography and map interpretation.
