About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Surgical Technologist II to join our team at UNC Health Care. As a key member of our perioperative team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Perform technical skills duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards of process.
  • Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
  • Follow aseptic technique and proactively identify contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Perform surgical counts and follow policies and procedures for incorrect counts, reporting discrepancies appropriately.
  • Establish and maintain a sterile field and ensure the team maintains a sterile environment independently.
  • Label drugs and solutions, monitor quantities used, and assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
  • Actively participate in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during the procedure.
  • Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities that affect the surgical procedure.
  • Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information, developing modifications to standard approaches to care and communicating with the surgical team.
  • Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital-wide emergency management plans.
  • Inventories, receives, and stores supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
  • Serve as a role model for new hires, on-the-job trainees, and other identified teammates, and participate in teaching, guiding, and evaluating the performance of peers during orientation and annual review processes.
  • Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment, and assist with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas.
  • Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
  • Participate in data collection for research projects under the direction of an RN.
  • Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology, or formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 5+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through The National Center of Competency Testing.
  • 3+ years of professional experience.
  • Successful completion of service-specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies.
  • Strong communication skills/customer service relations.
  • Excellent organizational/priority setting skills.
  • Ability to function effectively as a mentor & team player.
