About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Surgical Technologist II to join our team at UNC Health Care. As a key member of our operating room team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe and equipment functions properly.
  • Assist surgeons and registered nurses in the operating room, demonstrating expertise in sterile and aseptic technique.
  • Perform surgical scrub duties across multiple services, ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards of process.
  • Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
  • Follow aseptic technique, proactively identifying contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique and implementing corrective actions.
  • Perform surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies appropriately.
  • Establish and maintain a sterile field, assuring the team maintains a sterile environment independently.
  • Assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
  • Actively participate in the planning and set up of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during the procedure.
  • Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities which affect the surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrate appropriate and correct case preparation, assisting in picking cases and planning of instrument needs.
  • Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information to develop modifications to standard approaches to care and communicate with the surgical team.
  • Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital-wide emergency management plans.
  • Inventories, receives, and stores supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
  • Serve as a role model for new hires, on-the-job trainees, and other identified teammates, serving as a mentor for Surgical Tech peers and participating in teaching, guiding, and evaluating the performance of peers during orientation and annual review process.
  • Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment, assisting with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas.
  • Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
  • Participate in data collection for research projects under the direction of an RN.
  • Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology, or Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 5+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through The National Center of Competency Testing
  • 3+ years of professional experience
  • Successful completion of service-specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies
  • Strong communication skills/customer service relations
  • Excellent organizational/priority setting skill
  • Ability to function effectively as a mentor & team player
  • On-call (May be a requirement depending on the position)
