The Billing Specialist is responsible for managing the processes related to entering patient demographic and insurance details, as well as office and surgical charges, payments, and adjustments. This role collaborates closely with insurance coordinators to gain a comprehensive understanding of various insurance plans and OCR's participation with different carriers. Additionally, the Billing Specialist handles cashiering tasks, including settling patient accounts, issuing receipts, preparing bank deposits, and ensuring a balanced cash drawer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exhibits a solid understanding of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, modifiers, and corresponding charges, ensuring accurate data entry into the system.
  • Records daily visit charges and payments accurately and promptly, ensuring all batches are reconciled and forwarded for review.
  • Updates patient demographic information and collects necessary billing and insurance details from patients and colleagues as required. Processes billing through the Health Care Finance Administration and Uniform Billing Form 92 (UB92).
  • Reviews visit tickets, claim forms, and explanations of benefits for discrepancies and communicates findings efficiently.
  • Addresses concerns, risk management issues, and protocol breakdowns with the supervisor, adhering to the established chain of command.
  • Maintains a tidy and organized workspace, including personal areas, computer stations, and record storage.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • At least one year of experience in a data entry role, preferably within a medical setting. Educational qualifications may substitute for experience.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated speed and accuracy in data entry and 10-key operations.
  • Core competencies include attention to detail, planning and organization, effective communication, teamwork, and maintaining confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

This position operates within a standard medical office environment, which may include regular interruptions and distractions such as phone calls and staff interactions. The role is primarily sedentary but requires the ability to navigate the office and operate various office equipment, including computers and telephones. The individual must frequently communicate with patients and colleagues using different communication tools. Occasionally, the employee may need to lift or move items weighing up to 20 pounds safely.
